iPhone 5: No Steve Jobs, no sizzle

Apple's iPhone 5 launch with new iPods and an iTunes overhaul highlights the new era at the company that revolves around incremental updates, design prowess, and control of an entire user experience. But something is missing: the Steve Jobs reality distortion field.

Jobs' showmanship was brilliant. He could take an incremental update -- or a feature that has been seen somewhere else before -- and make you think it was brilliant, amazing, and beautiful. I knew it was a game, but it was one I played willingly. I'm going through Apple keynote withdrawal.

Now I'm beginning to … Read more

But Apple, which by selling more than 400 million iPhones has plenty of clout, isn't bound by the usual constraints. Thus, you can bet that the Lightning connector that debuts on the new iPhone 5 will be a success. … Read more

Apple iPhone 5: Early reactions from around the Web

Now that the feverish iPhone 5 anticipation is simmering down into the reality of the announcement, it's time to see what the initial reactions are to the news.

Here's the big summary. The glass and aluminum iPhone 5 sports 4G LTE, a 4-inch Retina display, an upgraded camera, iOS 6, and a fast new A6 chip. It's also 7.6mm thick and weighs 20 percent less than the iPhone 4S. One of the biggest changes is the new, much-smaller Lightning connector. An adapter will make it work with older connectors, but it's quite a departure for both consumers and accessory makers.

Looking back at the iPhone 4S announcement last year, a lot of people we're decidedly underwhelmed. The iPhone 5 is finally here and everyone has an opinion to share. Apple's senior vice president of product marketing Phil Schiller called it "an absolute jewel." Do others agree?… Read more

With iPhone 5, Apple is out to prove it's still the king

Apple made the case today that its newly unveiled iPhone 5 should take its rightful spot atop the smartphone food chain.

But for seemingly the first time, it's not exactly a slam dunk that Apple's device belongs there.

When the iPhone 4 debuted in June 2010, it was the phone to own. The Android phenomenon hadn't taken over yet, and Samsung Electronics was still finding its way. Established handset vendors Nokia and Research In Motion, meanwhile, were at the beginning of their quickly accelerating declines. The momentum was behind Apple and CEO Steve Jobs.

Will you buy the iPhone 5? (poll)

Well, it's official.

The new iPhone is the iPhone 5, and many of the rumors proved to be true: bigger screen, 4G LTE, and a faster processor -- all good stuff, to be sure.

But revolutionary? Not hardly. At first blush, the new model is simply playing catch-up with a number of other smartphones already on the market, without a single "wow" feature that'll have people talking.

The question is, will the iPhone 5 have people buying? And by people, I mean you: Did you already mark your calendar for September 14 so you can be among the first to preorder, or are you going keep your wallet in your pocket?… Read more

At long last, the iPhone 5 is here, and now the dissection begins.

Of course, whether it truly lives up to expectations won't matter to millions of people with older iPhones (and other smartphones) who've been waiting to upgrade to the next iPhone no matter what. But for those who have an iPhone 4 or 4S and are on the fence about upgrading, here's a look at some key features Apple left out of this model that may find their way into the next iPhone (let's call it the iPhone 5S for now).

Siri comes to iPod Touch

Apple has added its digital assistant, Siri, to the iPod Touch, the company announced at its event in San Francisco today.

The change was included with upgrades that are also included on Apple's new iPhone 5. As CNET reporters at the event and on CNET's live blog noted, Apple has made a Touch that emulates the functions of an iPhone, without the phone service.

The device is also available in a myriad of bright colors and with a wrist strap, which may indicate that Apple is shooting for a younger crowd for the device.

The new iPod Touch: A 4-inch screen, and Siri too

The latest iPod Touch sports a 4-inch screen just like its iPhone 5 counterpart.

Unveiled by Apple today, the new Touch measures a thin 6.1mm and weighs in at a svelte 88 grams, making it the thinnest and lightest iPad Touch yet.

Powered by the A5 chip currently found in the iPhone 4S, the new Touch is designed to kick in with a faster performance than its predecessor.

Apple says that the dual-core A5 makes the new Touch seven times faster than the previous model at graphics performance. The new model also boasts a battery life that offers 40 … Read more
