Yahoo launches Mail app for iPad, Android tablets

Yahoo on Thursday released a Mail app for iOS and Android tablet users and a Weather app for iPhone owners.

A Yahoo Mail app has already been in play for the iPhone and Android smartphones, but the new version takes advantage of the larger screen size of tablets. A full-screen reading mode lets you flip through your e-mail messages as if you were reading a magazine.

Flipping through messages this way feels so much more natural than having to tap on each e-mail in the inbox to read it, especially on a tablet. It's an innovative and welcome approach, … Read more

Apps Installer for Android 0.2.1 Review

Users acquiring applications from outside sources may have problems with the installation process on older Android devices. Unlike in newer versions of Android, in which the operating system automatically installs an APK file, in older versions another application is needed to start the installation process. Apps Installer for Android provides this service in a clear and comprehensive way.

Apps Installer for Android downloads instantly. The program is very light and functions well. The user interface is very basic, though. On large, high-definition screens the graphics appear pixelated and washed out. After an application has been saved on an SD card … Read more

Google Drive, Apps, Gmail all back online, Google says

Google users should once again be able to access their apps, files, and e-mail.

Following a service disruption earlier today that took down Google Drive, Google Apps, and Gmail, all three appear to be back in business. Google's Apps Status Dashboard page shows all three as accessible, with comments that the problems should be resolved.

Service disruptions also had affected Google Groups and the Google Admin Control Panel used by organizations to manage their Google Apps services. But the status page points to both of those as accessible once again.

The status page updates show that the disruptions were … Read more

The iPhone maker has turned up on a list of companies being investigated in China over allegedly offering pornographic material through their Web sites or app stores, The Wall Street Journal said today.

Based solely on a rough Google-translated version of the People's Daily piece, … Read more

How do I look? Glasses.com app lets you try on shades at home

Here's a common scenario: You're looking for new frames at your optometrist or local sunglasses shop, and you realize you don't like anything in stock. You could look through their additional catalogs, but you're wary of ordering anything that's not in front of you.

You could also sign up for those try-at-home sites that send sample frames to you, like Warby Parker. But with all that back-and-forth, getting a new frame might take a while. And, you know, "seeing things" is sort of a priority.

To solve this problem, Jonathan Coon -- CEO … Read more

The battle for the future of television is just beginning, but it looks to be a long one. One of the key players is Microsoft, which has spent the past several years morphing its Xbox 360 from a straight-up gaming console into one of the best video-streaming boxes you can buy.

Of course, the current Xbox 360 is getting long in the tooth, and the next-generation model is expected to be announced soon, and to be available as early as the end of 2013. And TV services look to be just as central to the core of that device as … Read more
