Rovio tries to strike gold twice with Amazing Alex launch

Rovio's Angry Birds is still the top game in the mobile arena. But now, the company is trying something new.

The developer announced today that it has launched Amazing Alex for iOS and Android. The game will allow players to take control of 35 objects that can be set in motion to create a Rube Goldberg device. The objects can "bounce, pop, ricochet, bash, and crash into each other," Rovio says. The game is launching with 100 levels.

Rovio didn't create the game from scratch. Earlier this year, the company acquired the intellectual property rights to Casey's Contraptions, … Read more

Angry Birds trilogy coming to a console near you

Activision and Rovio have confirmed that an Angry Birds trilogy for consoles is under development.

The trilogy will contain the original Angry Birds game, Seasons, and Rio, but will not include the recently released Angry Birds Space.

Designed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo 3DS, the games will be packaged on one disc or on a cartridge for the 3DS. According to IGN's online store and media reports, the trilogy is pegged for release in December this year.

Rovio's executive vice president of games, Petri Jarvilehto, told IGN that the games have been developed "from … Read more

Internet Doomsday averted, ISPs save day

Monday's top stories are about Windows, Twitter, iPhones, and flying pigs. You know, the usual tech talk:

Monday was said to be an "Internet Doomsday." Anyone infected with DNSChanger malware would lose access to the Internet. But turns out, it wasn't all that dramatic. Internet service providers like Comcast, AT&T and Verizon are stepping in and helping anyone still bit by the server-enslaving bug. If you have a friend that needs a fix, here's how to administer the cure.

Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will be available at the end of October. If … Read more

Get a bare-bones matching game in Angry Birds Matching

Lovers of Angry Birds might be excited to find Angry Birds Matching, a spin-off puzzle game. However, we can't say this program is much to get excited about. It's an extremely basic -- and not particularly interesting -- puzzle game that is only related to Angry Birds inasmuch as it's ripped off the game's characters. If you like Angry Birds, stick to the original, and if you like puzzle games, there are innumerable options out there that are both more fun and more challenging.

The format of Angry Birds Matching will be familiar to anyone who'… Read more

Get a mediocre puzzle game with Angry Birds Connect

First things first: If you're a fan of Angry Birds, don't get excited about Angry Birds Connect. This game has virtually nothing to do with the original Angry Birds, and we feel pretty certain that the creators of Angry Birds Connect simply ripped off the characters from Angry Birds and inserted them into what is otherwise a fairly generic puzzle game.

Angry Birds Connect reminds us a little bit of that old Windows tile puzzle, Taipei. The tiles aren't stacked as they are in Taipei, but are simply arranged in a hexagon-shaped grid; each has the face … Read more

Angry Birds sequel could let you play for the pigs

Will Angry Birds fans soon be able to switch sides and play for the pigs?

Game maker Rovio will reportedly twist its popular game later this year with a new version that would let you fire pigs at the birds, according to gadget-enthusiast site Pocket-Lint.

Few details were available, though the game would still feature the same catapults and well-known stone structures.… Read more

Get Angry Birds Seasons free for iOS

If you somehow managed to avoid buying Angry Birds Seasons over the past 20 months, your patience has paid off.

Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Seasons HD (for iPad) are the iTunes free apps of the week. They're normally priced at 99 cents and $1.99, respectively.

Apple's "week" began yesterday (Thursday), so you've got roughly six days to take advantage of this offer.

True to its name, Angry Birds Seasons is a theme-oriented spin-off of the original game -- that theme being, well, seasons. Thus you've got level collections ranging from summer and winter to St. Patrick's Day and Halloween.… Read more

Rovio to pirates: Let's be partners, not enemies

Rovio's success has spawned a host of unauthorized products across China bearing the Angry Birds name. But that doesn't mean the company wants to get into a legal spat over it.

Speaking to Reuters in an interview today, Rovio marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka acknowledged that a new market has cropped up in China with the sole purpose of capitalizing on the Angry Birds franchise without paying licensing. And although his company has, in some cases, used legal means to stop it, in many others, it has decided to turn those operations into partners.

"We tend to want … Read more

That didn't take long: Angry Birds Space hits 100 million downloads

Angry Birds Space has reached another important milestone.

Rovio announced on its Twitter feed today that the game has been downloaded 100 million times since its launch in March. The news comes just over a month after Rovio announced that the title had hit 50 million downloads in its first 35 days of availability.

Back in April, Rovio said that Angry Birds space has become the "fastest-growing mobile game" ever released and had beat out all previous installments in the Angry Birds franchise. It appears, based on the span of time between announcements, that Rovio's game has … Read more

New Angry Birds Space episode leads to Utopia

Those Angry Birds in space are still making me angry, only now they've added a new episode to thwart me even further.

The latest update to Angry Birds Space for iOS launches a new episode into orbit, this one dubbed Utopia. Unfortunately, I haven't progressed past the initial Pig Pang, so Utopia and all the episodes leading up to it remain locked to me. (Anyone know a good unlock code?)

Rovio describes Utopia as a delicious food planet with 10 new levels complete with popcorn, cookies, and candy apples to tempt the hungry pigs. Players can "bounce … Read more
