Apple prepping budget-friendly, 8GB iPhone 4?

All the talk surrounding an imminent iPhone 5 hasn't caused Apple to forget about the iPhone 4, a new report claims.

Citing anonymous sources, Reuters is reporting this morning that Apple is planning to launch an 8GB iPhone 4 model "within weeks." According to the news service, Apple wants to offer the 8GB model to folks in emerging markets and those who want to get their hands on the latest device from the company at a more affordable price.

The exact price of the new model hasn't been disclosed, but Reuters is reporting that it will … Read more

Best Buy offers iPhone 3GS for free--for a day

The iPhone 3GS just got better--for the moment, anyway. Best Buy is offering a free 8GB version of the one-rev-back iPhone model with a two-year AT&T contract. Clearly we're in the iPhone 5 rollout zone.

The offer's only good for one day--today, Monday, August 22--and it's only available in-store at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile. But I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the start of a trend.

Analysts have recently been predicting that the 3GS price would drop from $49 to $0 and the 16GB iPhone 4 from $199 to $99 when the iPhone 5 is officially announced.

According to analyst predictions, free iPhone 3GSes could more than double the number of iPhone users worldwide from an estimated 64 million to 150 milllion. A Touchpad firesale this ain't.

So, is free (with contract) cheap enough for a phone that's soon to be two revs old? Buying a 3GS was questionable at $49. Free seems like a pretty good deal.… Read more

Could Apple sell 30 million iPhones next quarter?

With a new iPhone expected this fall, Apple's flagship device could deliver record sales of 30 million units around the world just in the fourth quarter, according to an analyst from investment firm BTIG.

In an investor's note released yesterday, analyst Walter Piecyk pointed to the strong demand for a new iPhone as one key reason for his forecast, which is higher than BTIG's current estimate of 21.5 million.

In comparison, Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones during last year's third quarter (its fiscal fourth quarter), the first full quarter following the launch of the iPhone 4Read more

T-Mobile offers Micro SIM cards for iPhones

T-Mobile USA began selling a Micro SIM card today, necessary for people who want to bring their iPhones or iPads over to its network.

It's an awkward offer as T-Mobile is openly encouraging iPhone customers--of the AT&T variety, and not Verizon Wireless--to switch carriers. At the same time, AT&T is attempting to acquire T-Mobile in a deal that would create the nation's largest wireless provider.

T-Mobile lists the Micro SIM card on its Web site, and is selling it for $9.99 or giving it away with a two-year contract. Next to the photo, … Read more

The pitfalls of buying an iPhone 3GS

With the $49 iPhone 3GS, you get what you pay for.

Now more than two years old, the iPhone 3GS is still a hot seller thanks to a steep discount offered by Apple and AT&T. It's a brilliant move by both companies: Apple gets to tap into a new base of price-conscious consumers, while AT&T gets to sign up even more customers to its pricier data plans.

But it may not be the smartest move for the consumer. The iPhone 3GS offers a slower processor than even mid-market smartphones in the market. Its older design … Read more

Apple to offer iPhone 3GS for free, says analyst

Apple will offer the iPhone 3GS for free and the iPhone 4 for $99 timed with the release of the iPhone 5, says an analyst from RBC Capital Market.

In an investor's note issued yesterday, analyst Mike Abramsky said that in line with the launch of the iPhone 5, he expects Apple to slash the price of the 3Gs to $0 on contract ($399 unsubsidized) and the iPhone 4 to $99 ($499 unsubsidized).

The analyst believes these price cuts will be part of an entry-level iPhone strategy on Apple's part, designed to "target mid-market smartphone buyers and … Read more

How well does iOS 5 run on iPhone 3GS?

Update 10/13: We've been running iOS5 on a iPhone 3GS for the last 24 hours and have had no problems with it. It runs smoothly and the experience doesn't seem noticeably different from running iOS4. We'll let you know if we encounter any bugs as they come along, but for now it seems safe to say iOS5 works fine on the 3GS. To be safe, backup your iPhone (sync) on your computer and save any photos you have on your device to iPhoto before downloading and installing the update to iOS5.

Just a few weeks ago, … Read more

Rumor: iOS 5 will not be available for iPhone 3GS

Such is the way of technology. Just two years after its release, the iPhone 3GS may be deemed "too old" for Apple's next iteration of its mobile operating system, iOS 5.

Mobile phone blogger Eldar Murtazin, from the Russian site Mobile-Review, stated frankly in a tweet recently (via MacStories): "Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3GS wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will."

The comment did not come with a follow-up on sources of the information and could very well just be an educated guess on Murtazin's part. Whether fact or fiction, … Read more
