Links of the day (food poisoning edition)

I caught a touch of food poisoning yesterday and I'm not still not totally right. While generally not a great experience, something about pulling over in the Tenderloin to hurl felt all too comfortable.

My blog traffic goes way up when I talk smack

It's amazing what a little bit of smack talking will do for your traffic. You commenters take yourselves way too seriously. My last post was designed to address some of the FUD in market and be flame-bait. I do like the fact that everyone thinks Ross is a gentleman. He is. It's that British thing he's got going on.

My ploy to upset some people worked and now I am over it. Moving on...

Denial-of-service attacks affect networked coffee-maker

As a recovering coffee addict (I was doing a minimum of 6 Peets espresso shots by 3pm every day) the idea that hackers could somehow prevent me from enjoying the liquid crack is very upsetting. Now that I am down to just a few cups a week this is less disconcerting.

If you own a Jura F90 Coffee Maker, you can also buy a Jura Internet Connection Kit, which lets you program and set your coffee prefs via the network: however, its got a bunch of vulnerabilities that allow for remote denial-of-coffee attacks

Fake Steve himself confirms that some sort of hiatus is planned for the next several months, alluding to the recent "concern" over his health in unfurling a plan to spend several months recharging his irreplaceable internal battery on an island in the South Pacific.

Fake Steve was quite the sensation last year, but Internet memes … Read more

Hell's Kitchen video game (Get sworn at by Gordon Ramsay!)

Gordon Ramsay is one of my favorite celebrity chefs, and when I learned there was a video game of his semi-stupid reality game show Hell's Kitchen I was very excited. Overall, I find the Hell's Kitchen show to be a bit annoying but I love Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. And I think his cooking is fantastic despite the fact that he is clearly insane.

In the game, you're put in charge of Hell's Kitchen restaurant. You progress through five weeks as you rank up from dishwasher to senior chef. You are both cooking in the kitchen … Read more

The Soup's Joel McHale on popular culture (and stupidity)

Following up on Matt Asay's post about why Google is making us dumber, I ran across this AV Club interview with Joel McHale, host of The Soup on E!. I watch The Soup every week and I am convinced that I should have that job.

AVC: Do you think the war on stupid culture is unwinnable? Are we headed for Idiocracy? M: Oh, that's a good question. I think the smart people will get even smarter, and the dumb people will get even dumber. But I think they all will enjoy A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila, … Read more
