On truths, dreams, confessions -- and the iPhone

Sometimes I just wander into places.

No reason I should. No reason I shouldn't.

Tonight it was a fascinating North Vietnamese restaurant called Khong River House in Miami Beach. It's been open only four days and the staff have that staring-eye look that reminds you of exam day at college.

Still, for reasons of sheer art, they have an installation near the restrooms. The idea is that you take one of the provided pens and write down your truth, your dream, or your confession on a piece of board that you then hang for all to see.… Read more

Friday Poll: Are you sticking with Instagram?

Instagram and its owner Facebook really stepped into it this week. A new terms of service update set to go into effect on January 16 would have given Instagram the right to sell users' photos or use them in ads.

As you might expect, the prospect of Instagram running rampant with photos didn't sit well with its 100 million users. The interest in escaping Instagram grew, with nearly 6,000 readers sharing over Facebook CNET's instructions for backing up and deleting their Instagram accounts.

It took a little while, but Instagram finally coughed out an apology and backtracked … Read more

'Gangnam Style' the first video to hit 1B YouTube views

The wildly popular "Gangnam Style" music video by Psy has gone where no YouTube video has gone before.

Earlier today, the official video surged past 1 billion views, making it the first clip on the site to ever hit that mark, and the latest in a long line of feats for the popular video.

Last month, "Gangnam Style" surpassed pop star Justin Bieber's "Baby" video to become the most popular YouTube upload of all time. Bieber's video, which at the time had 805 million views, was beaten in just five months. As … Read more

Steve Jobs' yacht impounded

This just happens too often.

You spend years waiting for your yacht to finally, finally be made to your specifications, and then some ridiculous member of officialdom -- usually badly dressed and with a mustache -- prevents you from taking possession.

This appears to be the case with the yacht that was the late Steve Jobs' brainadult.

One can hardly call it a brainchild. Venus -- with Philippe Starck on board as co-designer -- is a homage to everything sleek and sophisticated.

It is something that would float every Apple fanperson's boat.

And yet, as the Associated Press reports, … Read more

Kim Kardashian: Instagram's No. 1 enemy?

As you tense your loins, waiting for the end of the world, those in charge at Instagram are squeezing other muscles. For rumors have emerged that the site's most popular user, Kim Kardashian, is considering shutting down her account and taking all of her pretty pictures with her.

Oh, yes.

Kardashian is, reportedly, appalled, sickened, nauseated, shocked and stunned to the core (I might be exaggerating some of these emotions) at Instagram's audaciously offensive policy changes.

Should you have been detained at an office party for the last few days, Instagram suddenly decided it could sell all your … Read more

Spotify competitor Deezer sets sights on U.S.

Deezer, a Spotify competitor operating internationally, has set its sights on the U.S.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal in an interview published today, Deezer CEO Axel Dauchez said that his company is "looking for a partner in the U.S." that would allow it to gain access to a "significant volume of subscribers."

It's not clear what Dauchez is looking for in a partner in the U.S.

Deezer's service is available in 160 countries. The company offers two free hours of ad-supported music streaming, but also has monthly plans ranging in … Read more

Digital entertainment in 2013: Five predictions

How much stock can you put in the many predictions being made for the tech sector in the new year?

Well, here's my record as a tea-leaf reader from last year: 1-for-2 on the major picks. That's right, I was wrong -- dead wrong -- when I said the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) would pass. Going into 2012, the entertainment sector appeared to have all the congressional support it needed to pass the legislation designed to make it easier for federal authorities to shut down accused pirate sites. The reason the defeat of the bill was such … Read more

In Brazil, an iPhone that isn't an iPhone (it's Android)

Brazilians think different.

Why, only last night I had dinner with the great Brazilian-American chef Berenice de Araujo of Miami's Standard Hotel. She explained to me there's a certain "bats*** crazy" that flows through Brazilian veins.

So why be surprised that Brazil has an iPhone that isn't, well, an iPhone?… Read more

Start-Ups: Silicon Valley Ep. 8 -- the grand delusion

Last night saw some history in "Start-Ups: Silicon Valley."

Yes, given its rather tawdry ratings -- 20 percent of those of "Real Housewives," so rumor has it -- this could be the last episode ever. So the excitement was more palpable than that for the discovery of the tomb of a hitherto unknown ancient Egyptian king.

We began with grunting. Yes, Sarah (blonde lifecaster, recently recovering from not having breast cancer) and David (gay, vaguely sane) are working out.

Sarah has found a wonderful sponsor for the launch party of David's app. It's called … Read more

Gather 'round Cyrcle for real-world social-media alerts

Cyrcle is a bit hard to define. It's a Kickstarter project. It's an augmented-reality device. It's a creature of social media. Its maker Symplio calls it an "intelligent decorative object."

We met Cyrcle's prototype predecessor Rymble last year. The new incarnation is pretty different, though they both share a circular shape and a similar desire to bring social-media notifications into the real world. … Read more
