A look at Intego Internet Security Barrier X6 for OS X

When it comes to anti-malware utilities, a few prominent names stand out, including Norton, Kaspersky, and Sophos, in addition to some smaller and perhaps Mac-only tools like iAntiVirus and MacScan. Among the popular options for OS X is VirusBarrier from Intego, which I recently gave a spin.

VirusBarrier is offered in two versions: the basic VirusBarrier X6 package and the extended Internet Security Barrier suite that includes VirusBarrier and a number of additional utilities. I chose the latter to see what advantages it may offer over the basic VirusBarrier antivirus scanner, especially given recent malware developments on the Mac and people's interest in keeping their systems safe.… Read more

VMware 4.1 lifts block on Snow Leopard Client virtualization (updated)

Recently VMware released version 4.1 of its Fusion virtualization software for OS X, which in addition to offering a number of bug fixes and speed improvements has lifted its restriction on virtualizing the Client version of Snow Leopard.

In the past, and as is the case with other virtualization options, when you tried to install Snow Leopard or another operating system that is restricted from virtualization by its EULA, Fusion would issue an error message notifying you of this restriction. Now VMware appears to have changed this so its software only requests that you abide by the operating system's EULA, … Read more

In this day and age, there is so much talk about the cloud solution and how you can share files in a snap. Well, that's great and all and I'm a huge fan, but what if you don't want to share your files in the cloud? For example, my mom loves to send me photos of her outings with her friends and my adorable nephews and niece--except that she literally sends out 10 e-mails with at least 10 photos attached to them. So, how can I help her help me, so I don't have 100 pictures, … Read more

Apple releases Lion Recovery Disk Assistant tool

One of the hot topics regarding OS X Lion has been the lack of a physical installation drive that be used in troubleshooting problems and to recover or reinstall the operating system. We have reported extensively on this and the options for handling it, which have included mirroring the Lion recovery partition on an external drive, and creating your own Lion installation disk from the Lion installer that you download from the Mac App Store.
