The devil's in the phone call

Murphy's Law for mobile phones: the minute you turn off your cell phone to spare your co-workers that Weird Al ring tone, your crush will finally dial or text message you.

MoPods can spare you this cruel fate. They're cutesy little plastic-encased creatures that rotate and flash to let you know you're being contacted when your phone can't. You can choose to get crazy cell phone dances from characters including a gangster, one-eyed monster, bulldog, monkey, pitchfork-wielding devil or pink kitten (hey, this gadget did originate in Japan!).

To work, the battery-run MoPods--which sell for about $… Read more

iPhone to come to Cingular?

As we told you yesterday, iPhone rumors in the past year have become like I Love Lucy reruns--you just can't get away from them. But in recent days some of the most interesting gossip has emerged with a report that a Taiwanese company has received an Apple order for 12 million iPhones. This is the latest picture of the supposed device, but as with every other "iPhone" photo we've posted, we have no way of knowing whether it's real or fake.

We're also hearing again that Cingular will be the exclusive launch carrier for … Read more

Mood phone analyzes your emotions

If you crossed a mood ring with a cell phone, what would you get? More importantly, why would anyone think of such a thing?

The people at Panasonic and NTT DoCoMo have apparently done just that, and the result is a mobile phone that changes color depending on your emotional state. The key to this bizarre feature is something called the "Feel Talk" function (so Japanese), which analyzes your voice tones and patterns while you're conversing.

Depending on what kind of day you're having, according to Gear Live, the phone can show "10 variations of … Read more

Slide into EV-DO

Mobiledia says Verizon Wireless will introduce a new slider EV-DO phone by the end of the year. According to the Web site, the Samsung SCH-U620 will offer access to Verizon's V Cast streaming video service and V Cast Music for downloads. Other expected features include support for VZ Navigator, a MicroSD card slot, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth with a stereo profile. From our perspective the phone looks very sexy; we hope to get our hands on it soon.

Chocolate Addict

I was in London this summer and was introduced to something so incredibly delectable: Green & Black's organic dark chocolate. The flavor and richness is ever so wonderful. Yes, I am a chocolate addict!

It was also in London that I caught the first glimpse of another line of chocolate: The LG Chocolate! The phone is for sale in the U.S. with three color choices. Which one should I choose? The sexy black, the elegant white or the glam pink. What a dilemma! I'm going to munch on some Green & Black's chocolate while I think … Read more

Samsung's late bloomer

Samsung quietly introduced the Samsung SGH-X507, a mostly basic model we thought had become lost in the cell phone wilderness. Though the SGH-X507 first appeared on Cingular's radar screen last spring, the carrier took its time in formally introducing the phone. In fact, by late summer when we still hadn't seen SGH-X507, we began to dig a plot for it in our mobile graveyard. But just as we were about to hold services, Cingular brought it back to life.

Behind a basic black and gray flip phone design is a simple feature set meant for making calls. Highlights … Read more

Home videos go mobile with MoboFlix

Up until now, Seattle start-up Melodeo has concerned itself mostly with a sort of "social podcast" business model that combines an audio directory, user profiles, and an appeal to customers who are interested in mobile podcast listening via its Mobilcast product. It's had some success, inking deals with cell phone carriers. But now the company has launched something completely different: MoboFlix, which aims to be a sort of YouTube for mobile videos.

The concept is this. Use your camera phone to film a mobile video, submit it to the MoboFlix site, and it can be viewed by … Read more

HP aims to paint a pretty picture with cell phones

Hewlett-Packard and contract manufacturer Flextronics have struck a deal that's likely to improve the quality of your cell phone photos.

Flextronics has licensed digital-imaging technology from HP and will begin to incorporate the technology into cell phones that hit the market in 2007. HP currently includes the same technology in its own digital cameras. The upshot is that the 3-megapixel shots taken with these tiny camera phones will be largely equivalent to the shots taken by digital still cameras. Flextronics makes phones for Motorola, Kyocera and Sony Ericsson, among others.

Camera phones are an emerging threat to the still-growing … Read more
