Instagram for Android: The good, the bad, the ugly

To longtime Android users such as myself, the name Instagram might not mean much. Sure, we see the vignetted photos invading our Facebook and Twitter streams, and we notice the instagr.am links all over the place, but other than that, we don't really get it. I mean, what is it, exactly? Is it just a bunch of camera filters? Is it a Tumblr-like social network? Well, now that everyone's favorite hipster photo app is available, let's take a close look at how the Android version (download) of this uberpopular app works.

First thing I need to … Read more

Instagram logs 2K signups a minute

Instagram is an instant hit with Android users.

The photo-sharing app, which was made available to Android phone users today, was signing up new users at a rate of 2,000 people a minute, Kevin Systrom, Instagram's chief executive officer, told The New York Times.

The free app has been around since 2010, but only for iOS devices. However, with more than 430,000 Android users on the app's waiting list, it's no surprise that there would be an immediate influx of sign-ups. … Read more

Instagram for Android is now available

Instagram has been around since 2010, available only to iOS devices. Android users have been waiting patiently, with repeated promises of an Android version arriving soon.

While we knew the Android version of Instagram was coming sooner rather than later, with the release being teased just last month at South by Southwest Interactive, the exact release date wasn't clear. Well, the day has finally arrived.

With more than 430,000 Android users on the waiting list, Instagram is now available in Google Play. The app carries with it the same features (except tilt-shift/blur) and a similar user interface … Read more

Instagram for Android imminent: Now taking sign-ups

Good news for Android users who've had to sit by the sidelines watching their iOS friends have all the Instagram fun. The company yesterday opened a sort of registration for Android users, giving them the chance to be "first in line" for the app made for Google's platform.

We knew Instagram for Android was coming really soon. Founders of the popular photo-sharing app, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, said as much at South by Southwest earlier this month. "In some ways, it's better than our iOS app. It's crazy," Systrom said about … Read more

Share Hipstamatic photos on Instagram

With the latest update to Hipstamatic comes the ability to push your Hipstamatic photos to your Instagram feed. It marks the first time Instagram has opened its doors to a third party. As with Hipstamatic, Instagram lets you share your photos on Facebook and Twitter among other social networks, but it has never allowed photos taken with other apps into its network. Until yesterday.

After you update Hipstamatic, you'll notice that the app features a new layout. Select a photo to share, tap the share button in the upper-right corner, and you'll see a row of six grayed-out … Read more

Instagram clicks with Hipstamatic

The popular photo apps Hipstamatic and Instagram seem to have drawn a little closer.

Instagram has 17 filters to choose from for touching-up and enhancing photos before sharing, while Hipstamatic's free features include four lenses, three types of flash, and three kinds of film. The point here is this: there's a lot more people can do with photos using Hipstamatic, but there's been no one-step way to share them.

Until now, judging by a Hipstamatic tweet today:

Sharing is about to get easier! Tag Facebook friends & upload to multiple networks, incl. @Instagram http://bit.ly/yQunPt (@… Read more
