There may be a lot of new green cars on the floor at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, but powerful cars still have a strong presence. We take a look at the new Ford Shelby, Jaguar R series, Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, the last SLR, and a new supercar from Revenge. These cars show there is still a place for highly tuned engines with performance-oriented suspensions.
Just in time for no one to afford it, Audi has revealed photos and details of an $188,267, ten-cylinder version of its R8 supercar. More formally known as the Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, this up-rated R8 features more upgrades than just an extra pair of cylinders.
Starting with the titular 5.2-liter V-10 FSI engine, this version of the R8 makes more power than the now entry-level V-8 version, building power to 390 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 RPM before going on to create a maximum 525 horsepower at 8,000 RPM, just over the 100 … Read more
Volkswagen got a lot of mileage out of its 3-liter turbocharged V-6 diesel engine at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. It appeared in the Touareg TDI and the Audi Q5 TDI, signaling Volkswagen's launch of diesel SUVs in the U.S. This engine uses a complex emissions system that lets Volkswagen and Audi sell the vehicles in all 50 states. A particulate filter gets rid of the bigger stuff, while a solution called AdBlue breaks down nitrogen oxide emissions. Also on hand was the much more powerful TDI-powered Volkswagen Baja 1000 competitor.
The Audi A4 gets a serious update for 2009, with a much-needed cabin tech overhaul. But the fun really starts with the new Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which gets a new rear differential. We put it to the test on some slick roads, pushing it to the limits of traction. Along the way, we also try out the new Audi Drive Select feature, which lets you choose from sport or comfort settings for the steering, suspension, and transmission.
Audi of America today announced plans to offer HD-Radio technology as a standard feature in many of its vehicles, beginning with 2011 models, which will start arriving in dealerships in 2010. Let's face it, analog radio sounds horrible when compared to almost any digital medium, so Audi's decision to include the best-possible-sounding broadcast technology meets with our approval.
This is also good news for HD-Radio broadcasters, because although HD-digital broadcasts are both free and much higher in quality than analog broadcasts, consumers have been slow to adopt the technology. This is partially due to ignorance about the medium, … Read more
What will race cars look like in 2025? The Los Angeles Auto Show, in its fifth annual Design Challenge, posed this question to automakers' design studios. Entrants from Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Volkswagen show off differing takes of what will be required for future racetracks.
Want to see a bunch of alternative-fuel vehicles? Going really fast? Head to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, near Monterey, Calif., this weekend, October 17 to 19, for the final races of the 2008 American LeMans Series (ALMS) calendar.
Don't look for "Gasoline Alley" at the track. The cars run on E10, 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline; E85, 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline; or clean diesel. The ethanol part of the E85 of choice is celluosic, made from waste wood, not corn, and the diesels are among the quickest cars in the world.

PARIS--More than one European carmaker is on the verge of doing something it wouldn't have considered a few months ago.
They're thinking of selling very small and fuel-efficient cars to Americans--cars designed and developed with only Europe in mind.
Two small cars that debuted at the Paris show are under consideration for the United States. One is the Audi A1 Sportback Concept, which is about 10 inches shorter than Audi's A3. The production version could hit U.S. shores.
"A year ago, I would have said no," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi's worldwide sales and … Read more
