Nokia continues to remain coy about its plans for a Windows 8 tablet, but a little thing like that isn't going to stop people from imagining what it might look like.

My Nokia Blog reader Tristan submitted this sleek concept called the Lumia Coffee Tab. Taking major design cues from the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900, Tristan imagines the tablet with a 9.7-inch AMOLED (1,280x800 pixel) clearback display for use with Windows 8's Metro touch user interface. … Read more

It's time to kiss that removable smartphone battery goodbye

What do the iPhone, Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, and Nokia Lumia 900 have in common? The fact that their batteries can't easily be removed.

Last week, the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx wowed us with its slim physique and a long battery life that nearly doubled that of the original Droid Razr. The one component that made it possible is the unremovable--or embedded--battery.

Cell phones with batteries you can't pop out are more common than you may think. Apple has made embedded batteries a mainstay in every iPhone since its first.

In fact, add up the iPhones, both Droid Razrs, two Nokia Lumias (800 and 900), and the upcoming Motorola Droid 4 and it appears we have a trend on our hands.… Read more

If Nokia wants to stand out, it needs to get radical

commentary Nokia needs to embrace the radical, if its smartphone business wants to thrive.

Over the past year, the Finnish company has undergone some dramatic shifts--embracing Windows Phone, dropping Meego, and relegating its longtime Symbian platform to lower-end devices--all in an effort to turn itself around. The company's recent line of Lumia Windows Phone, featuring clean, colorful designs and the latest version of Microsoft's critically lauded mobile platform, mark a positive development. But if Nokia really wants to succeed, the Lumia phones should represent only the beginning of its smartphone revolution.

Fortunately, it appears that Nokia has the … Read more

iPhone 4S helps Apple inch past Android in the U.S.

Apple gained a slight edge over Android in the U.S. smartphone market last quarter, courtesy of the 37 million iPhones sold.

Eyeing the U.S. smartphone market for the December quarter, research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech pegged Apple's share at 44.9 percent, double the percentage from a year ago. That narrowly beat Android's market share, which fell to 44.8 percent from 50 percent.

Across the world, Android still retained its smartphone lead, but Apple's iPhone is growing at a faster rate over its rival, according to Kantar. In the U.K., for example, Apple'… Read more
