Go, go, gadget arm

Have you ever wanted to feel like Inspector Gadget, but actually growing mechanical appendages wasn't a viable option?

The Quik-Pod (which despite its name, mercifully has nothing to do with digital audio) is an extendable handheld tripod. It screws in to the tripod hole of a camera and when you click a button, it extends your reach 18.5 inches.

This could be cool. It might mean my self-portraits are no longer blocked by my arm, but I can get over that pretty quickly. The Quik-Pod is $24.95, and collapses to 7.5 inches in your pocket.

Don't lose your head with this camera

When taking photos, we've beheaded more people than Henry XIII's personal executioner. That's why this new Fujifilm camera may be tailor-made for us.

The FinePix Z5fd, according to Akihabara News, can recognize and focus on faces so that they stay in the picture. Although this feature has been offered in some of Fujifilm's more expensive lines, we're hoping that that this model will be more affordable though no pricing has been disclosed.

We're so bad at focusing (especially at parties where alcohol is involved) that we're still not convinced we'll be able … Read more

Multitasking underwater with aquatic camera

In our sensory-inundated world, multitasking isn't confined to terrestrial pursuits. While you swim with your iPod and transfer USB files, for example, you can also be taking photos underwater.

The newest entry in aquatic photography is a 6-megapixel camera from Japan's Sea & Sea (shouldn't it be "Sea & See"?), which was posted on Engadget. In or out of its protective casing, the camera is no slouch where specs are concerned: It has a 2.5-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom and 32MB of built-in memory contained in a 3.7-by-2.2-inch body that's less … Read more

Not your father's colonoscopy

Given Imaging has come up with another pill for use in examining your insides.

Although it seems comical, this is one gadget you will really be happy about someday. The PillCam Colon Capsule Endoscope is essentially a large pill with cameras inside it for viewing the colon.

Like the PillCam ESO for the esophagus and the PillCam SB for the gastrointestinal tract, patients swallow the pill with water, according to Given Imaging.

The PillCam Colon can generate up to 144,000 images over a 10-hour period, and includes additional features suited to the large intestine that the PillCam SB lacked. … Read more

Darling eStarling is back from the dead

Last year, ThinkGeek started selling a 5.6-inch, Wi-Fi-enabled photo frame--"the first Web 2.0-compatible image appliance"--from a company called eStarling, and it sold out almost immediately. According to the folks at ThinkGeek, the frame "connects to a wireless network and automatically displays photos e-mailed to it in a slide show format. Additionally, you can specify an RSS photo feed from Flickr based on your own tagged keywords. You can even shoot photos on your mobile phone, then e-mail them directly to your eStarling frame for display."

Sounds pretty good, right? Well, eStarling couldn'… Read more

Cameras that make you go 'hmmm...'

I don't know about you, but I was getting sick and tired of all those 0.8-inch-fat 7-megapixel cams, like the Sony DSC-T10 and Casio EX-S770, trying to pass themselves off as ultracompacts. Thank heavens BenQ came along with its X720, which not only gives me 7 yummy megapixels, but squeezes them into an anorectic 0.49-inch-thin chassis! Now there's room in my pocket for a camera and Tic Tacs! In fact, I'm even more surprised that the company's not touting the X720's ability to shoot at to as high as ISO 4,000 as … Read more

Point and shoot under water

There must be something in the air today. Or, to be more accurate, the water.

Earlier, I posted an item about a waterproof USB storage device. Now, we get news about underwater casings produced by Fantasea (pronounced "fantasy") for several Nikon Coolpix cameras.

The casings, which form a watertight seal around the camera, enable photographers to take pictures underwater, while protecting the camera itself from damage. All the of the casings for the Nikon Coolpix cameras are priced at $200, can withstand a depth of up to 130, and allow photographers to use zoom, macro, exposure, mode, menu, … Read more

Kate Moss and a free camera case

So it seemed like an ordinary press release: Nikon is giving away a limited number of free leather camera cases to Coolpix owners.

At first, we were like, "blah blah blah free camera case giveaway equals lame promotional stunt." But actually seeing it, we changed our minds.

For people willing to register their Coolpix (and personal information) on Nikon's promotional Web site, the Zac Posen Coolpix Camera Accessory (aka camera case) is actually pretty nice.

The case, as you can see, is made of black and camel leather and based on the design of the fall 2006 … Read more

The juicy details on 'low-cost' Treo

Hey, here's a shocker (well, not really, since we know Palm can't keep a secret): today, the company announced the new Palm Treo 680, a low-cost version of its famed smart phone. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly what "low-cost" means as Palm, in its ever-teasing fashion, didn't reveal specifics on pricing, carrier (although we have our guesses, Cingular, cough, cough), or availability today. Palm CEO Ed Colligan did say, however, that it will be priced competitively with similarly featured smart phones out there, and its aim is to reach a broader and more geographically … Read more
