Fujifilm's farm-fresh FinePix cameras

Fujifilm has three new FinePix cameras on the way, including one with a powerful lens and another that proves there actually is a step between 8 and 10 megapixels.

The FinePix S700 is a 7-megapixel midrange camera with a 10x optical zoom and an electronic viewfinder. Like most midrange EVF-equipped cameras, the S700 is targeted at amateur photographers who want to get their hands on more advanced options without shelling out the cash for an SLR. Unfortunately, it lacks any sort of mechanical or optical image stabilization beyond an ISO 1600 sensitivity setting, so you'll need to use a … Read more

Canon 1D Mark III brings new sensor, processor to SLRs

Canon has countered Nikon's competitive new SLR cameras, revamping its high-performance line with the EOS-1D Mark III. The camera introduces a bevy of new features: a higher shooting rate, a new image processing chip, a live display, a more sensitive image sensor and a self-cleaning sensor.

The 10.1-megapixel camera, announced late Wednesday, can shoot 10 frames per second. That's a notch up from the 8.5 per second of the preceding model, the 8.2-megapixel 1D Mark II N. It can shoot a burst of as many as 30 raw images--those pulled directly off the sensor without … Read more

2007 Canon PowerShot SD models hold a few surprises

Another year, another crop of snapshot cameras. This year, Canon's going a bit retro with its Elph design, bringing back the high-contrast black accents that appeared on the original film Elphs 10 years ago.

They've come a long way in that decade. This year's SD750 and SD1000 are 7-megapixel replacements for the the very popular 6-megapixel models, the SD630 and the SD600, respectively. Yes, that's right: The SD750 is the higher-end model of the two.

Despite disparate outsides, the two cameras are fundamentally the same. The major difference is a 2.5-inch LCD on the SD1000 … Read more

Canon's skyscraper cam

Cramming large lenses into ultracompact cameras isn't very new. Neither is a vertically oriented digital camera design--in fact, most of the earliest models looked more like camcorders than traditional film cameras. But most manufacturers have been folding their optical path sideways to fit 4x-plus lenses into tiny cameras. But when Canon went looking for more interiorl real estate to fit a 10x 39-to-390mm-equivalent lens into its new 7-megapixel ultracompact, it took a New York approach and went vertical.

The lens completely retracts back into the camera when powered off, and extends just about a half-inch past the camera body … Read more

Canons for beginners

Canon is on a roll. Just after the release of the PowerShot A460 and the A550, the company announced two new PowerShot A-series cameras on the way, the Canon PowerShot A560 and the A570 IS.

The two 7-megapixel cameras are nearly identical, save for one important distinction. The A570 IS, like other Canon -IS cameras, the PowerShot SD800 IS and the A710 IS, uses optical image stabilization. This handy feature mechanically shifts the lens to reduce the effects of shake when shooting. Optical image stabilization can be very useful when zooming in to take shots. The A560 doesn't have … Read more

Two Pentax premieres

Less than a month after their last announcement, Pentax has unveiled two new cameras. The Pentax Optio A30 and the W30 are two compact cameras that respectively offer high-resolution and waterproof shooting.

The Optio A30 is an ultracompact camera that packs a 10-megapixel sensor into a metal body that's just 0.9 inch thick. It uses a fairly standard 3x, 38-to-114mm-equivalent lens with Pentax's Enhanced Shake Reduction digital image stabilization. The camera includes a wide variety of features and modes, including a face-recognizing autofocus and autoexposure mode, a manual exposure mode for more advanced users, and a 30fps … Read more

Sony's new Cyber-shot cameras partially revealed

An anonymous tipster has apparently tipped off Engadget to a catalog showing the British versions of Sony's new Cyber-shot cameras. Most of the catalog images indicate the information is confidential until February 27, which is when we'll have more details on the U.S models.

While you wait, here's what Engadget is reporting based on its catalog browsing: the new models are called the T20HDPR (camera/printer bundle), T100 (pictured), T20, H9, H7, G1, W200, and W90 Cyber-shots.

Engagdet says, "All the new cams bring Sony's Super SteadyShot image stabilization and HD output to the … Read more

'Spy pen' isn't worthy of 24

Speaking of Jack Bauer, this product is not one you'd find in the pocket of his Kevlar vest. The "Digital Spy Camera Pen" reminds us of something Ian Fleming's "Q" would have provided as standard equipment for Her Majesty's Secret Service. And with images of only 160x120 resolution, the quality is about as good as a gadget from the 1960s as well, though MobileWhack says the small file sizes mean the pen can store up to 36 photos. At $60, you'd think this would have for more than 2MB of storage these … Read more

Size Matters: 7x zoom in Samsung's tiny L77

Samsung has a new camera on the way, and it puts a big lens in a very small package. The Samsung L77 measures less than an inch thick, but it packs a 7x optical zoom lens into its slim metal body.

The 7-megapixel camera includes some useful features that work well with the powerful zoom. The L77 uses Samsung's Advanced Shake Reduction to help keep shots steady, and the sensor can reach up to ISO 1600 for dark and high-speed shots.

The L77 also features a 30fps VGA movie mode that can record MPEG-4 movie clips. This movie mode … Read more

Nikon trips the light enthusiastic

This spring, Nikon's Coolpix P series of compact cameras--a steady, solid, mainstream family of midprice models--will be welcoming its geeky uncle Coolpix P5000 to live in the attic.

With the P5000, Nikon belatedly returns to the the market with an enthusiast-oriented compact. With features such as the full set of manual and semimanual exposure modes and a flash shoe, the black P5000 looks ready to take on the Canon PowerShot G7. And, in fact, it has many similar specs: a 10-megapixel sensor with maximum ISO 1,600 (ISO 3,200 at 5 megapixels), optical image stabilization, a 2.5-inch … Read more
