Wacky dual-screen laptop prototype for sale

Eagle-eyed eBay watchers latched onto an auction this morning for a bizarre dual-screen laptop, made by a company called Xentex. According to the eBay page, this is a semifunctional prototype, but this system was actually sold briefly in 2003, as the $5,000 Flip-pad Voyager.

It features two 13-inch screens, side-by-side, and each screen can pivot around individually, like a convertible tablet. The whole thing looks to be about the size of an HP HDXdesktop replacement.

Bidding is up to $405 right now, but the auction runs until May 29, so there's still plenty of time. Of course, you … Read more

Would you buy a gold iPhone for $6,000?

Readers are always asking, justifiably so, who in their right minds would buy a gold or diamond- studded gadget. (The operative phrase here is "right minds," of course.) But ours is not to question why.

What we do know, if this eBay auction is any indication, is that some people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for a 24k gold iPhone--presuming that the bids are authentic. The auction, tracked by Gizmodo, drew 69 bids and ended with a sale price of $6,000 last night.

The phone itself is unlocked and of the 16GB variety, apparently … Read more

eBay to unveil fair-trade marketplace

SAN MATEO, Calif.--Catering to a rising tide of socially-conscious shoppers, eBay this summer plans to help publicly launch WorldofGood.com, a marketplace for buying fair-trade products, according to Robert Chatwani, eBay's general manager of the project.

eBay, in partnership with a separate fair-trade company World of Good Inc., has already built a community site for people interested in goods that are made of recycled materials or produced by fairly treated workers, for example. But the two organizations plan to open a shopping site that will cater to these "social change consumers," Chatwani said here Tuesday at … Read more

Craigslist files lawsuit against eBay, claims unfair competition

UPDATE (3:50 p.m.):To include eBay response.

Craigslist, the Web's No.1 online classified site, has filed a lawsuit against eBay, in a move that will surprise few.

According to a copy of the lawsuit, filed Tuesday in California Superior Court in San Francisco, Craigslist accuses eBay of unfair competition, misappropriation of proprietary information, false advertising, and breach of fiduciary duty. Craigslist has asked the court to force eBay to surrender its interest in the company.

The two companies have been circling each other ever since eBay, which is a minority shareholder in Craigslist, opened a U.S. version of Kijiji, … Read more

Another Mac clone maker spotted on eBay

Another entrepreneur is trying their hand at selling unsanctioned Mac OS X desktops.

AppleInsider spotted an eBay listing on Tuesday for a generic desktop tower running Mac OS X Leopard, weeks after Psystar made a very public show of defying Apple's licensing agreement for Leopard with its Open Computer. "Chris555" is selling the unbranded desktop for a fixed price of $549.99, plus $50 shipping and handling.

Is this the latest in a wave of Mac clone makers emboldened by Psystar? Apple has remained silent on the issue to this point, but lawyers think the company would have a good chanceRead more

Did eBay's Kijiji launch spook Craigslist?

How would you like having one of your main competitors sitting on your board?

That's the position Craigslist found itself in after eBay bought a 28 percent share of the online classified publication in August 2004. The relationship was cordial until last July 3, when eBay launched a U.S.-version of Kijiji, its own classified Web site and Craigslist competitor.

I thought back to that day when I heard eBay had filed a lawsuit this week against Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and CEO Jim Buckmaster. The online auction service alleged that the men tried to strip eBay of … Read more

eBay releases details of complaint against Craigslist

The mystery over what prompted eBay to sue Craigslist last week appears to be solved.

Apparently eBay feels that its ownership stake in Craigslist was unfairly reduced following eBay's launch of rival online classifieds service Kijiji, which went live overseas in 2005 and in the U.S. in 2007, according to the 26-page lawsuit filed in Delaware's Court of Chancery and made available by eBay on Wednesday.

According to the heavily redacted, public copy of the complaint, which names Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and CEO Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist views Kijiji as a competitive activity that cancels some shareholder … Read more
