The fragmented world of wireless charging is getting a little order, which means you will be able to place any phone down on a charging station and top off your battery -- well, eventually.
Two of the three major wireless charging groups, the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), have signed an agreement to ensure that their two standards will work together. By coming together with a common certification for the two different technologies, the groups hope to spur the inclusion of wireless technology in more devices.

Sonos may be the undisputed king of wireless home audio, but that hasn't stopped a steady stream of new competitors over the last six months.
Beep is the latest entrant in the increasingly crowded wireless audio market, offering up a new Wi-Fi-based multiroom audio solution. Unlike Sonos or Samsung's Shape wireless audio systems, Beep isn't selling speakers, focusing instead on a solution that works with the audio gear you already have.
The system is centered around the dial. It's an attractive piece of gear, with a solid, metallic feel, although most of the casing is actually … Read more
President Barack Obama has won a commitment totaling $750 million from a number of technology companies to help low-income students in K-12 public schools get early access to the Internet and educational tools.
Apple is pledging $100 million in iPads, according to the AP. Microsoft is offering up its "billion-dollar response," which is essentially the potential to inject $1 billion in savings into the system. The company will offer Windows-based tablets, laptops, and devices through its manufacturing partners; 12 million copies of Office; copies of its Windows 8.1 Pro operating system; and student and teacher educational resources. … Read more
Late tonight PS4 owners can download a new system update (version 1.60) that delivers support for Pulse and Pulse Elite Edition wireless stereo headsets to the PS4. A New York Times report is providing more fodder for iWatch speculation, including the purported use of solar power.
Apple has been testing both solar and wireless charging for the rumored iWatch, according to a story in Sunday's New York Times.
This could conceivably involve the use of a charging plate.
Another method to juice up the watch may be to integrate a solar-charging layer in the screen, according to the report.
Yet another involves "charging the battery through movement, a method that is already used … Read more
US wireless carriers who have the urge to merge will meet resistance in the form of the Justice Department.
In an interview with The New York Times published Thursday, William Baer, assistant attorney general in the antitrust division, said that any merger proposals on the part of the major US carriers would encounter intense scrutiny. Baer cited "much more favorable competitive conditions" in the mobile landscape since the DOJ filed a lawsuit to block the merger between AT&T and T-Mobile in 2011. AT&T eventually withdrew its offer.

A teensy bit of carbon could make the radio communications components at the heart of mobile phones smaller and less expensive.
IBM has coaxed useful wireless-communications work out of graphene, a form of carbon whose promise in next-generation computer chips has been hobbled by manufacturing difficulties. In an IBM Research paper published Thursday in Nature Communications, Big Blue describes how it has built a graphene-based receiver integrated circuit that successfully extracted the letters "IBM" from a 4.3GHz radio broadcast.
Graphene, which consists of a lattice of carbon atoms interconnected into a layer just a single atom thick, … Read more
AT&T may still have its eye on a merger with UK telecom provider Vodafone, according to a report from Bloomberg News, which cites people familiar with the situation.
Even though the Dallas-based carrier stated earlier this week that it is not interested in buying Vodafone Group, which offers telecom services in 21 countries, the company is still interested in Vodafone and may make a bid for the company. It likely won't make a move for at least six months. That's part of the requirement under the UK's Panel on Takeovers and Mergers.
