TomTom for iPhone version 1.3 gets new features, traffic charge

TomTom's latest version 1.3 update to its navigation app for iPhone went live this week, adding a handful of new features that we were expecting, and a few that we didn't.

We'd heard previously that the 1.3 update would bring integrated Google Local search and TomTom Traffic. However, rather than rolling the traffic service into the update, TomTom gives users access to the service as an in-app subscription. For U.S. users, this means shelling out $19.99 per year to gain access to live flow and incident data for more accurate routing and arrival … Read more

TomTom's Ease is low-cost, low-complexity

With its Ease GPS device, TomTom has somehow managed to slip a new entry-level portable navigation device into the lineup below its previous entry-level TomTom One series. This places the Ease and the One in the precarious situation of potentially stepping on each others' toes at the sub-$150 price point--after all, there are already six One series variants listed on TomTom's Web site.

For the purposes of our evaluation, we compared the Ease with the TomTom One 140 S and found that while the Ease isn't as feature-rich as the best of the One series, it is … Read more

TomTom iPhone app getting update, live traffic

GPS device manufacturer TomTom continues to put its weight behind its TomTom app for iPhone with a new version 1.3 update. This revision, which has just been submitted to Apple for review, will add real-time traffic speed and incident reports for more accurate routing and travel time estimates.

Also included in this update is Local Search powered by Google, for finding points of interest that are not included in the preloaded database without leaving the app. TomTom tells us that there will be other yet unnamed enhancements that will be detailed when the app emerges from this end of … Read more

Hands-on with the TomTom Ease

LAS VEGAS--On Wednesday, we told you about TomTom's newest entry-level GPS device, the TomTom Ease, and now we have up-close photos of the device from the show floor. We still weren't able to coax a final price out of TomTom's reps, but we were able to confirm that the Ease will be priced in the $100 to $120 range.

After an admittedly quick poke through the Ease's menus and interface, we've concluded that TomTom's interface simplifications don't appear to extend too deeply into the menu structure. The new home screen is nice and … Read more

Ease into navigation with TomTom's new entry-level GPS

LAS VEGAS--TomTom is attempting to lower the learning curve for the entry-level GPS buyer with its new Ease line of GPS navigation devices. The Ease is remarkably similar to the TomTom Start, which debuted in European markets last year, and may well be the same device but with North American maps.

For users unfamiliar with the Start, the Ease is a smallish device, built around a 3.5-inch color touch screen with either a black or white chassis. TomTom's EasyPort mount is recessed into the back of the device, resulting in a flat profile with none of the suction … Read more
