Yahoo-Alibaba-Softbank: Still no deal

Let's make a deal? Not yet.

One day, Yahoo and its two Asian partners no doubt will finally resolve their long-running talks about how to deal with the sale of its Asian properties. Each of the three players involved in this long-running melodrama--Yahoo, China's Alibaba, and Japan's Softbank--has an interest in getting this done. But it seems that disagreement still rules the day.

The rumored deal would have involved swapping Yahoo's ownership in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan back to those companies in a trade for some still-to-be-determined assets. But the talks are now dead in the … Read more

Softbank unloads most of its 4 percent stake in Yahoo

Softbank has agreed to repay a $1.135 billion loan to Citigroup by selling most of its 4 percent stake in Yahoo.

The Japanese Web and telecom company said in a press release that it plans to transfer its Yahoo shares to Citigroup as repayment for a 2004 loan. After unloading the stock, Softbank has reduced its Yahoo stake to just 0.002 percent.

The original agreement called for Softbank to repay the loan with either cash or the Yahoo stock. With Yahoo's shares tanking since the deal was signed, Softbank netted a huge profit on the deal. The … Read more

Alibaba, Yahoo, Softbank settle Alipay rift

Alibaba, Yahoo, and Softbank said today they have settled a financial squabble over Alipay, a payment system in China.

The companies have dueled over disclosure and legality of Alibaba's move to spin off Alipay and today's agreement puts the issue to rest. Alibaba transferred Alipay outside of the company so it could get a non-bank payment company license. Chinese regulators didn't want China's largest online payment system owned by outside shareholders.

In May, the flap between Yahoo and Alibaba boiled over. Yahoo wasn't notified about the Alipay move until March 31. Questions were quickly raised … Read more

Yahoo Japan switches to Google search

If there was any doubt that Yahoo Japan is separate from Yahoo in the United States, let this dispel it: Yahoo Japan has signed a deal to use Google's search engine rather than Microsoft's.

The deal, reported Monday by All Things Digital, was confirmed later that day with a Google Japan blog post.

In the post, Daniel Alegre, vice president of Google's Asia Pacific and Japan operations, said Yahoo Japan will use Google search results and Google's technology for supplying the accompanying search ads. With such partnerships, revenue from the search ads is shared between the … Read more

Twitter phones to hit Japan

Mobile phones exclusive to Japan have long been more sophisticated than those in the rest of the world. Tarantino's cheerily crazy Japanese cell phone ad

You may need a little Xanax after observing this. Equally, you may never want to take any drugs ever again.

For Quentin Tarantino, he who makes movies that contain blood, gore, and many homages to Asia, recently shot a TV spot for the Japanese cell phone company Softbank.

As well as an astute grasp of Japanese, you need to have a very firm grasp of existential philosophy to fully appreciate this spot. Without an astute grasp of Japanese, I can tell you that this is the latest in a series of spots that features the White family.

Just to give … Read more

Japanese launch $1,000 samurai iPhone cases

What if samurai had owned cell phones?

That's the concept behind Softbank's five new Japan Texture cases for the iPhone 3GS/3G. The gorgeously lacquered cases, handcrafted with gold dust highlights, are intended to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern IT tools.

Great warriors like Oda Nobunaga vied for supremacy around the time of Japan's Warring States period (1467-1568). They were ruthless military commanders who commanded absolute loyalty from their legions of samurai.

Today, they can be bling in your pocket. Softbank is selling the cases for the paltry sum of $1,000 apiece.

Samurai were very … Read more

Japan to try GPS phones to prevent pandemics

Just recently, Softbank Mobile, Japan's biggest cell phone carrier, signed a deal with Aoyama Gakuin University to provide iPhone 3Gs to 1,000 students to keep tabs of their attendance via the phone's Global Positioning System. The company now has a plan to equip the same amount of elementary-school students with GPS phones.

However, the purpose this time is much more serious than nabbing truants. As reported by the Associated Press, this is to test how GPS-enabled cell phones can help track the spreading of an infectious disease and stop it from becoming a pandemic. This is part of the Japanese government's effort to promote Japan's Internet and cellular infrastructure to new users.

This government-backed experiment uses a virtual sickness that is highly contagious. A few months from now, a few students will be chosen to be "infected" with this sickness. Their movements will then be tracked via their cell phones and compared with other students. Stored GPS data can then be used to determine which children have crossed paths with the infected students and are at risk of having contracted the disease.

The families of exposed students will be notified via cell phone messages with instructions on how to get them checked out by doctors. In a real-world outbreak, this could help better control the rate of new infections.

The significance of this level of control is demonstrated via Softbank's calculation: If an infected person spreads the illness to another three people per day, and each newly infected person then makes another three people sick, on the 10th day about 60,000 people would catch the disease. However, if each sick person only infected two people a day, after 10 days, then only about 1,500 people would get sick. … Read more
