A bit of a drag

We'll state up front that we are generally not very big fans of Windows desktop enhancements; too often they are clunky and buggy and end up slowing our system down instead of enhancing it. AeroSnap Plus aims to emulate the window dragging and resizing functionality of Windows 7 in other versions of Windows, and though it does work, we're afraid that it, too, falls victim to some of the problems that commonly plague applications of this type.

The program downloaded without issues and launched without installation. A six-tab menu appeared that was part options dialog and part Help … Read more

Web page snap shots

Web Snapper is an app and Safari plug-in that provides a fast and flexible way to capture screenshots of web pages. The Mac OS provides some very limited screen-capture capabilities with Grab, but Web Snapper provides many more options (especially in terms of format, and in its easy-to-use integration with Safari), and it can capture multi-page vector PDFs with actual text, links, and styling intact.

Web Snapper gives you a few different options for your interface, which will likely vary based on your workflow and browser preference. Using any browser, you can drag and drop URLs onto Web Snapper's … Read more

Capture anything on your screen

Savescreenie is a free, user-friendly front-end to access an undocumented feature in Mac OS: namely, the ability to save screen captures (typically grabbed with Command+Shift+4 or Command+Shift+3) in a variety of formats, instead of just the default PNG format (or PDF, if you're using Mac OS 10.5).

When you open Savescreenie, you're given a list of 10 formats to choose from (PDF, PNG, JPG, JP2, TIFF, TGA, BMP, PSD, PCT, and GIF), or you can reset the format to the default for the Mac OS you're using. The app also includes links … Read more

XM Satellite Radio that works in any car

Let's face it: FM radio sucks. It's full of static, the selection is painfully limited, and the morning shows are essentially the same crass telephone spoof that's been repeated for the past 10 years. At this point, FM radio just makes your morning commute even more insufferable than it already is (and for the NPR fanboys: public radio is excepted).

If you find yourself agreeing with me, then you might be finally ready to throw down for satellite radio. And if you're not ready to retire the beater or upgrade your entertainment system, Sirius unveiled another car accessory that will turn any stock radio into a satellite radio.

The XM Snap is a smaller version of the Onyx Dock and Play that you plug into a vehicle's power adapter. The advantage of the XM Snap over the Onyx appears to be the adjustable stalk that swivels so the driver or passenger can better see or use the radio controls.

The XM Snap is being released in October for $59.99. Of course, you still need a subscription. Whether the accessory plus the $9.99 to $16.99 monthly XM subscription fee is worth it depends on how much you hate listening to meatheads making crank calls in the morning. … Read more

It's a snap

We've reviewed our fair share of screenshot utilities in our time, and we can't say that it gets much easier than SnapaShot. This simple tool lets users easily capture exactly the portion of the screen that they want and save it in a variety of formats. While it's not the most feature-filled program we've ever seen, we think it's a great choice for basic screen capture tasks.

The program's interface is extremely common-sense; it consists of a frame that can be dragged around the screen and resized by dragging its borders. At the bottom … Read more

Aero, meet Aqua

Some of the best things about Windows 7 are the window-management tools under the Aero umbrella. Aero Snap, Aero Shake, and Aero Glass do nothing less than make Windows 7 competitive with Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard on the window management front. They pop visually, they're fun to use, and most importantly, they're useful ways of managing windows. But that doesn't mean you can't tweak them, and for people who want more out of their Aero, there's AquaSnap.

AquaSnap gives users fine-tuning control to change the Snap/Shake/Glass functionality, customize the Aqua … Read more

Ginormous DVR records 50 shows at once

You'd need 326 TiVo Premiere boxes to match what the SnapStream DVR can do with just one coax plug.

This SnapStream DVR is basically just a tech demo for now--but it's one hell of a tech demo. Loaded with 50 analog tuners, it can pull and record 50 channels, simultaneously, from your cable feed onto 136TB of storage. That means it's capable of saving 115,200 hours of searchable, recorded TV (or 13 years worth of content to watch).

Put differently, you could record 50 channels in your cable package for 96 days straight.

The system--which SnapStream … Read more

FanSnap--another way to find cheap concert tickets

Tuesday's post on using Craigslist to buy secondhand concert tickets drew a response from a company called FanSnap, which uses live feeds to aggregate ticket listings from online marketplaces and broker sites (such as StubHub and TicketNetwork) and eBay auctions.

FanSnap would argue Craigslist is fine for price-sensitive fans who don't need to go to a particular show and who are willing to meet and negotiate with other individuals, pay cash where necessary, and run the risk of buying a fake ticket. (Although the only time I've ever seen a fake concert ticket was in 1989 on … Read more
