SlimCleaner crowdsources power cleaning

Take an overpowered Windows cleaning utility and wed it to the crowd, and you've got the free SlimCleaner 1.6 (download). The cleaning utility can do just about anything you can think of, from deleting browsing tracks to uninstalling programs to cleaning up the assorted file detritus that daily use of your computer creates. What makes this particular program interesting is that, like Soluto, it draws on anonymously contributed data from its users to help keep your system running like a well-oiled machine. Unlike Soluto, SlimCleaner is really for advanced users, people comfortable mucking around in Windows system settings. … Read more

Samsung UND8000 TV review: Nearly naked picture lacks uniformity

The Samsung UND8000 LED-based LCD TV shows the company's considerable technological know-how brought to bear on a simple design goal: to make the "TV" itself disappear to as large an extent as possible when turned on, leaving nothing but the picture. Seen in person, the design is a spectacular success that will command attention and be worth the exceedingly high price to some buyers with cash to burn. And despite its compact dimensions the UND8000 also manages to squeeze in more features than just about any TV we've ever reviewed.

Other buyers, however, will have a … Read more

Seagate ships GoFlex Slim portable drive

First announced at CES 2011, the GoFlex Slim portable hard drive is the thinnest portable hard drive in the Seagate GoFlex family.

The company announced today that the drive is now available for purchase.

Equipped with a 2.5-inch, 7,200rpm Momentus Thin internal hard drive, the GoFlex Slim is just 9 millimeters thick, some 40 percent thinner than other GoFlex portable drives such as the GoFlex Pro (500GB). As a matter of fact, the Slim is even thinner than a traditional 2.5-inch SATA internal hard drive, which is 9.5mm.

The drive is preformatted using the NTFS file … Read more

Telecom tycoon beats out Gates for top billionaire

Forbes' latest list of the world's billionaires still points to Bill Gates and other familiar faces in the tech world, but Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim Helu again took first place as the richest.

Helu, whose family fortune is estimated by Forbes at $74 billion, up from $53.5 billion last year, owns America Movil, Latin America's largest wireless carrier. But the mogul upped his wealth over the past year through a series of mining and real estate deals as well as gains in the peso and the Mexican stock market.

Still in no slouch in second place, … Read more

Is Dyson's Digital Slim cordless vac worth the money?

If you've ever bought a Dyson product--or even looked at one--you know that they tend to run pretty expensive.

In the case of the Dyson DC35 Digital Slim, you're looking at $299 for a cordless vacuum. That's a lot of dough, but the Slim, which is shaped more like a cleaning weapon than an appliance, has a dash of Dyson's usual innovative, fancy-sounding technology. It sustains suction level (even when the bin is filled up) with something called Root Cyclone technology, and it comes with a "fade-free" lithium ion battery that you just won'… Read more

Synology upgrades its slim four-bay NAS server

More than a year ago, Synology released the DiskStation DS409Slim, which was an excellent network storage solution for a space-conscious environment. The server was one of a few, if not the only, four-bay NAS servers that host 2.5-inch laptop hard drives, instead of the regular 3.5-inch desktop hard drives, allowing it to be much more compact.

Today, the company announced the upgrade of the same server, called DS411Slim, with a faster processor and 256MB of RAM (as opposed to just 128MB of the DS409Slim).

Like all NAS servers from Synology, the DS411Slim runs DiskStation Manager (DSM) operation system (… Read more

New PC tune-up tool

Wow, new PC, eh? Nothing else like it: slim, sleek, and speedy, with gobs of space just waiting to be filled up. The last thing you'd need would be a system cleaner, right? What if we told you that it could be even slimmer and speedier if you removed some of the junk like software demos and toolbars that comes preinstalled on new PCs? Suppose there were a free utility designed specifically to slim down new PCs by clearing away the stuff you don't want and won't ever use before it becomes the computing equivalent of belly … Read more

CES: LG unveils one of the slimmest monitors ever

LAS VEGAS--Over the last few years, with the advent of LED backlighting technology, monitor panels have been on a hard-core diet or sorts, getting thinner and thinner. How thin you ask? How about a thinness of 0.28 inches?

This week at CES 2011, LG presented what may well be the thinnest monitor ever built. Hmmm, even using the word "built" seems to betray the sleek elegance this monitor conveys. "Forged" seems like a more appropriate term.

"Forged" seems even more appropriate when the E2290V's striking metallic-chrome chassis is revealed. Suffice it to … Read more
