Travel tech: Because you can carry only so much

To ensure you get some of the best technology coverage in the world, Crave travels quite a bit--which means we regularly get to test stuff out on the road. But after all this testing, what do we think is the best all-round travel kit out there?

Before we delve into the world of travel-friendly tech, let's start with the bag you'll need to carry all this gear around in. Our gadget bag of choice has to be the Crumpler Warm Shower laptop and photo bag (pictured here).

We love the cozily named Warm Shower because it has all … Read more

Gift for Mother Earth: First-aid kit

What do energy hogs deserve for the holidays? Earth Aid Kits are a not-so-subtle hint to those who leave the lights on when they leave the room and the faucet on while they brush their teeth.

The customizable packages start at $75 for a dorm room, $80 for an apartment, and $99 for a home. The accompanying Web site offers carbon calculators designed to tally a household's needs and potential resource savings.

A family of three would save $460 in energy bills and 7,442 pounds of carbon after using a kit for a year, the company suggests.

Sands through the hourglass count time in the shower

Showering can waste a gallon of water a minute. Yet a daily shower is one of those nonnegotiable, guilty pleasures I'm unwilling to sacrifice.

Still, the number of water-starved regions is only set to grow. For those who must watch every drop, a shower timer could be the next best thing to installing a high-tech, low-flow shower head.

A $3 timer from Envirosax, which makes trendy shopping bags, sticks to a shower wall with a suction cup. Its blue, pink, green, or gray sands take 4 minutes to pass through the hourglass.

Four minutes? Hair conditioner alone takes 2 … Read more

Get the weather while shaving

As noted too many times in this space, we can barely turn around without encountering another personal weather station, as there seems to be one created for every room in the house. But the one place we foolishly thought we'd be able to escape them--the shower--now has one of its own as well.

It may call itself the "Only Weather Station Shower Mirror" but, at this rate, we doubt that distinction will last through the end of the week. We're not exactly sure why anyone would need to monitor the barometric pressure outside while shaving, but … Read more

Digital shower for lazy bathers

Are we the only ones who thought this was a ski rack? Never mind. Off the slopes, this is the latest in an ever-growing list of digital bathing controls or, as we prefer to call them, "showers for lazy people."

We will say, however, that the "Ondus" from Grohe definitely has the most unusual name we've come across. But ultimately, it's just a digitally controlled faucet that can pause the water TiVo-style and resume flowing at the previous temperature, as Gizmodo says.

The black finish is a definite plus, and we appreciate the Ondus … Read more

Speaker looks good in the shower, even if you don't

There must be something in the air--or the water, to be precise. Just as we were wrapping up an item on a waterproof LCD, we got a note from our friends at Electronic House about a speaker that's designed specifically for the shower.

That alone is hardly new, but this one is still worth noting for its unobtrusive design. While most bath-friendly speakers blend into the decor about as seemlessly as an aloha shirt at the cotillion, the "SoundTile," does its best to live up to its name by looking like an intentional part of its surroundings … Read more

All hail the golden remote

How quickly things can turn. Only yesterday, we discovered that we have a mild interest in remote controls (as a lifestyle, not just gadgets); today, we learn that it's already on the verge of becoming a full-blown obsession.

What was our first clue? When we came across an item on BornRich, an innocent writeup on something called the "ThermaSol Steam Shower." It's pretty great, in and of itself: You can have a restort-style steam shower in your home, turning the bathroom into a mini-spa, complete with "a light system, a slick handheld remote, a metallic … Read more

If this shower were a shoe, it'd be a Louboutin stiletto with diamonds

At Crave, we're all about living the high life, or at least pretending we can--it sure beats Hello Kitty sometimes. You know, flying cars, Ferrari phones, and speaker-equipped cocoon beds. Basically, if it's gorgeously yet somewhat-obnoxiously designed, we're all over it (vicariously).

Consequently, we are totally drooling over this shower from Signorini Design (yup, it's Italian). Not only does it pour water forth from a sleek metallic block rather than a typical shower head, but a set of colored lights can illuminate the water in your shade of choice. Which means--yes!--it's color-changey. That basically … Read more

Ever wanted a combination shower-sauna?

Yeah, I thought so. This little appliance from DiVapor, featured on BornRich (naturally), will provide your bathing facilities with both an 8-jet steam shower and a personal sauna unit. Called the Utopia Steam Sauna, it'll only set you back $6,800.

The only beef I have with the design: it looks like you have to step out of the contraption entirely to go from the shower to the sauna or vice versa. But then again, I'm sure nobody who owns this thing will have much of a problem with freezing cold bathrooms to begin with. (Wirelessly controlled thermostats, … Read more

iKaraoke brings out your inner K-Fed

Contrary to what some might say, we at Crave are fully committed to one another (sometimes). So when one of us calls out for help, we're always there (unless we're not).

Take, for example, Caroline McCarthy's recent call for a karaoke mic to go with an iPod shower adapter. We spent minutes looking for one and tracked down the "iKaraoke" for the iPod. Firebox.com's product page describes it this way: "iKaraoke is a truly ingenious iPod accessory that sends the music from your iPod to your stereo minus the lead vocals, so … Read more
