Raytheon passes major Navy destroyer radar milestone

Raytheon this morning said that it has passed a major milestone in its bid to win a multi-billion dollar U.S. Navy radar contract.

The Tewksbury, Massachusetts military contract is currently competing against Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman for the lucrative contract to provide next-generation Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) technology for the Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. As part of its efforts to win the deal, Raytheon has just surpassed 1,000 hours of degradation-free testing on its Gallium Nitride transmit/receive modules. How HTC's new Windows Mango phones stack up

Ever since Microsoft took the wraps off of Windows Phone 7.5 (code-named Mango), we've been wondering how phone-makers would update the first crop of phones to carry the new operating system.

HTC gave us its answer with the announcements of the HTC Titan and HTC Radar, both available in Europe starting in October.

Next thing in wind energy: Stealth turbines

Reuters

Wind turbines that do not interfere with radar systems used by aircraft may soon become a commercially viable option for the wind energy industry, Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas said today.

"Our testing has demonstrated that we have successfully adapted military stealth technology to make Vestas wind turbines viable for placement in many locations that have been restricted by radar concerns," Vestas Technology R&D President Finn Strom Madsen said in a statement.

Vestas said it successfully tested in Britain a full-scale "stealth" rotor on a turbine, paving the way for wind power plants to be … Read more

The ultimate Hyundai

The Equus is not your typical Hyundai. First of all, it costs a lot more, over 50 grand, than you would expect from the economy car maker. It also has a V-8, massage seats, and a refrigerator between the rear seats. It competes favorably with the Lexus LS 460, which Hyundai clearly had in its sights when it designed the car. And although it might seem pricey for a Hyundai, it undercuts every other luxury sedan on the market by 10s of thousands of dollars.

In Ultimate trim, the Equus comes with two big, powered seats in back, the right side featuring an ottoman. There is also a rear seat entertainment system. With all the money you save buying the Equus over a Mercedes-Benz S-class, you can give the chauffeur a raise.

Scientists use radar to detect concussion

Most of us don't have to worry about getting a concussion on a daily basis. But plenty do (think hockey and football players, infantrymen, etc.), and without quick diagnosis, can risk long-term brain damage if they go back into the field too soon.

A new screening method developed at the Georgia Tech Research Institute could make fast and easy diagnosis, right on the sidelines, far more common. The technique, which examines a person's cognitive and motor skills at the same time, will be presented this week at the SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing conference in Orlando, Fla.

Using a simple radar system--the kind police use to measure the speed of vehicles--the researchers found that they were able to pick up on differences between normal walking patterns and those impaired by alcohol, which has been found to have a similar effect on walking as concussion impairment.

To be clear, this preliminary study is just that, preliminary, with a sample size too small to offer information that is more than anecdotal. But the findings have given the researchers enough data to want to test their approach further.… Read more

Acura RL updates come slowly

At one time a tech powerhouse, neglect has let Acura's top sedan, the RL, fall behind its competition. Although its five-year-old tech is by no means bad, it hasn't taken advantage of some current advances. Its engine is solid, but doesn't exploit modern efficiency technologies, it still uses an old navigation system, and Acura has even given its other, less expensive sedans better tech updates.

Acura has made a few important updates, such as giving it iPod support and Bluetooth streaming as audio sources. A six-speed automatic transmission keeps the drivetrain from being completely moribund. And its … Read more
