Slow cooking with a griddle

Griddles are extremely convenient to have set up and ready to go. Just turn it on, crack an egg or whip up some pancake batter, and off you go. The flat, evenly heated cooking surface will do the rest. Another convenient appliance is the slow cooker. Again, minimal amount of work is required: place protein, veggies, spices, and liquid in the pot and wait (after turning it on, that is). If only the two appliances were combined.

This isn't the first griddle/slow cooker we've seen, but West Bend seems to be stepping it up a notch. The … Read more

Hamburgers and hot dogs: Together at last

Sometimes choice is not a good thing. For example, when presented with the opportunity to have a hot dog or a hamburger, choosing can be difficult. Perhaps location will come into play for the decision: hot dogs at the ballgame, burgers at the backyard party. Or maybe what condiments are on-hand would be the deciding factor. But for those times in the comfort of your own kitchen, with all necessary condiments in the fridge, the best option isn't either/or, but rather, both.

At least the question of how best to prepare hot dogs and hamburgers can finally be … Read more

Open up the kitchen counter

Convenience in the kitchen is never farther away than the nearest appliance. Specialized contraptions of all shapes and sizes rest on our countertops waiting to be called upon for specific purposes. What can come as no surprise to anyone is that these countertops can become quite cluttered--and quite quickly, as we add to our arsenal of cookery. However, this maze of gadgetry doesn't have to be inescapable; one or two overachieving appliances with multitasking capabilities are all that is needed to create a sense of order into the kitchen.

Grill it your way

In some kitchens, the electric griddle sits next to the panini press, which sits next to the electric grill. Getting all of those small appliances in one unit would not only save counter space, but might keep a couple of us from going crazy when trying to remember which unit we're supposed to be using for a given meal. The Cuisinart Griddler offers a variety of cooking options for your countertop, letting you get rid of all those other types of electric grills. It performs all the same tasks without requiring any separate units.

A really cool cook top

At first glance, the Anti-Griddle from PolyScience looks more like a science fair project than something that you would use to create culinary masterpieces. It's about the size of a large microwave, and has a 1-square-foot cook top. The Anti-Griddle's cook top isn't your run-of-the-mill cooking surface: instead of heating up for sauteing, grilling, and frying, it cools down to a frigid -30 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in treats with frozen shells and soft, creamy centers.

If you're trying to figure out why an arctic chill "cook" top would come in handy, then you can … Read more

Grill marks a la granite

As a frequent host of dinner parties, I like to impress my guests. More often than not, my best impressions come from the presentation of my dishes. As a result, I seldom grill food for my guests, since the only outdoor grill I have is my roommate's, which (because I live in an apartment building) necessitates frequent trips to the roof. In any case, using the traditional grill for the more delicate pieces of fish I'm so in love with can be a recipe for disaster. I could pan fry a piece of fish and call it "… Read more

Dinner with a side of open-road danger

Sometimes you just have to amp a meal up a notch, especially when you have company. You could go for something spicy, or pull out the stops on dessert. Or you could just brand your meat as road kill.

The Road Kill Griddle makes it easy to add tire tracks to your dinner, as well as the words 'road kill' in capital letters. The griddle is impressively easy to use: when you light your grill, you just place your griddle on the grate immediately. It heats up, along with the rest of the grill. You simply cook your meat on … Read more
