Removing ads from new Kindle costs $30

There's some good news for those of you who are considering buying one of the new "subsidized" Kindles With Special Offers but are worried the ads might be too irritating: you can easily upgrade to the ad-free Kindle if you don't like it.

That's right, once you buy a Special Offers version, you can easily shut off the ads by simply paying a fee--the difference between what a Kindle Special Offers costs and what an ad-free version costs. In the case of the currently available non-touch Kindle 2011, which goes for $79 for the Special … Read more

GetJar: We've given away $1 million worth of premium apps

Independent app store GetJar said today that it had given away $1 million worth of pay applications through its Gold program.

That equates to roughly 500,000 apps at an average price of $2 an app given away since the program started earlier this month.

GetJar is just one of many alternative app stores that have sprung up catering to Android and other smartphone platforms. Its most well known rival, beyond Android Marketplace, would be Amazon's app store. The app stores cater to developers who are increasingly looking to other avenue for distribution and revenue opportunities.

GetJar offering premium Android apps for free

Mobile app store GetJar has unveiled a new program that serves up certain premium Android apps for free.

Looking to grab business from other app stores, GetJar's new Gold service specifically offers several Android apps for free that would cost some dough at Google's Android Market and Amazon's Appstore. The current crop of apps include some that can run as much as $4.99 elsewhere.

Right now, only about 40 such apps are available, but GetJar said that it's been introducing new apps every day in addition to the ones currently on the site. The company … Read more

Can you get around Getaround's car-sharing security?

Earlier this year, car-sharing startup Getaround won a TechCrunch Disrupt award for its CarKit technology, which makes it easy for car owners to rent out their cars to other members without requiring a physical key swap. But judges may have missed a flaw in the technology. A Forbes article points out that Getaround's system is a thief's dream because it provides a list of vehicles with their keys stashed somewhere in the car.

To find out if that's true, I spoke with Getaround's CEO, Sam Zaid. Getaround's CarKit is a device that enables borrowers to … Read more

GetGlue, a Foursquare for entertainment

On this week's episode of Tap That App, we take a look at GetGlue, a unique kind of social network that lets you "check in" to the movies and shows you're watching, books you're reading, games you're playing, and so on. Sort of like a Foursquare for entertainment, GetGlue takes your check-in data, your Likes, Favorites, and other Ratings, and uses them all to recommend other entertainment it thinks you'll enjoy. It even grants you collectible stickers--both virtual and physical--for all of your activity.

More than just a source of recommendations, though, GetGlue … Read more

Philly to increase distracted driving, biking enforcement

The City of Brotherly Love is trying to practice some tough love on pedestrians who don't pay attention while they're walking.

Launched in May, a campaign known as "Give Respect, Get Respect" is geared toward preventing unsafe behavior on the roads, including pedestrians who talk and text while they cross the street.

As one example cited in a story by the CBS Philadelphia station, one cyclist had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting a man who crossed against the light while yakking it up on his cell phone.

The program, which has mostly doled … Read more

Apple targets GetJar for using 'App Store' name

Apple has targeted yet another company on its path toward making the term "App Store" its own.

A cease-and-desist letter from Apple, represented by the law offices of New York's Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, has surfaced today and takes aim at GetJar, a company that claims to have "the world's largest free app store."

In the letter--which was acquired by The Wall Street Journal and dated June 22, 2011--Apple's lawyers take aim at GetJar's claim, specifically the use of the term "App Store." Apple asserts that those two words relate … Read more

Personal organizers are nothing new, but most of them are designed for businesspeople and are heavy with business-oriented features like client contact managers and meeting planners. We've recorded our own It Gets Better message from CNET and CBS employees. It is honest and powerful, and … Read more

Rumor redux: Return of the iPod Nano camera

Last we month we reported on Taiwanese Mac Blog Apple.pro showing a "spy" pic of a next-generation iPod Nano case that had a hole reserved for a camera. Well, Apple.pro has posted a new Nano spy pic that again strongly hints at Apple bringing image and video capture back to the Nano. We have no way to confirm any of this, but according to the site, the integrated camera will have a 1.3-megapixel image sensor.

As previously noted, some people were disappointed when Apple chose to shrink the iPod Nano, give it a smaller 1.… Read more
