Google Books case still a run-on sentence

At this point, Google and the Authors Guild must feel like they are in a James Joyce novel.

The Google Books case drags on with no hint of when the six-year dispute might finally be settled, four months after a final hearing was supposed to decide the issue once and for all. Google and the plaintiffs--representatives of authors and publishers--agreed to settle the massive case in October 2008 but delays after delays have prevented Google from offering out-of-print yet copyright-protected books in its Google Book Search product.

Getting a handle on celebrity Twitter IDs

In the fall of 2008, most likely after watching an episode of "Survivor," I hopped over to Twitter.com and registered the ID @jeffprobst.

I have absolutely no memory of doing this, or why I signed up using the name of the host of long-running reality show, but I've been a fan of the (CNET parent company) CBS series since 2000 and it must have seemed like a funny idea at the time to anonymously post little tidbits like "The tribe has spoken" or "I'll go tally the votes." But I quickly … Read more

Denny's social-network plan may not be fully cooked

If you've been to a Denny's restaurant recently, you may have noticed that on the bottom of the back page of the dinner menu, the company invites you to "Join the conversation!" by, among other things, visiting it on Twitter at twitter.com/dennys.

There's just one problem: that Twitter account is owned by a Taiwanese man named Dennys Hsieh, and of the 272 tweets he's posted--the last of which was on July 19, 2009--none appear to have anything to do with the ubiquitous always-open restaurants with the yellow signs visible from freeways throughout … Read more

Google book settlement draws fire in court

NEW YORK--The disparate and dissenting constituencies that showed up to federal court here on Thursday to comment on Google's plan to create a digital library illustrated just how polarizing and far reaching the effort has become.

The gallery at the federal court house here filled not one but two rooms (one room watched the proceedings via close-circuit TV). Foreign dignitaries squeezed onto benches with cane-wielding advocates for the blind, college professors, literary agents, authors of children's books, and, of course, lots and lots of lawyers.

The one thing that most in attendance shared was a passionate view of … Read more

Multicar crash at Daytona

I'm sure all of you auto racing fans are looking forward to this weekend, as on Sunday, Nascar presents one of the most famous events in modern racing history: the Daytona 500. The action at Daytona International Speedway is already underway with the Budweiser Shootout practice that took place last week, and if you think it was an uneventful precursor to the big race at Daytona this Sunday, then you were wrong. Why? Because Nascar got a start to its 2010 season not with a bang, but with a crunch as multiple cars became entangled in a nasty bang-up … Read more

Government warns of looming cyberthreats

White House Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair says the U.S. is severely under the threat of greater cyberattacks but believes we can rise to the challenge.

Blair appeared before a Senate panel on Tuesday to deliver the Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community (PDF). A statement of Blair's remarks to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was released for the record. While he focused mostly on non-cyberterrorism and similar threats, he led off with a stark report on the growing dangers and challenges of cyberwarfare.

Not-so-better days: Denny Hamlin's Vegas car fire

Over this past weekend, Denny Hamlin managed to upstage Nascar golden boy Jimmie Johnson at the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway as part of the current Nascar Sprint Cup chase series. Yeah, Hamlin's probably not going to win the championship this year (my prediction is Mr. Johnny Obvious aka Jimmie Johnson--look at the points advantage!), but still it's a career-highlight victory that stakes his claim as one of Nascar's stars. But while most drivers have their moments of brilliance, they usually also have at least a few moments in their career they'd rather forget … Read more

Denny Hamlin wins Tums Fast Relief 500, but...

Chances are if you're reading this, you're probably aware by now that Nascar driver Denny Hamlin won the Tums Fast Relief 500 "chase race" in Martinsville yesterday, where he led the race for over 200 laps. It's a big victory for Hamlin, not just because he guaranteed victory in Martinsville where he was squeezed out earlier this year by rival Jimmie Johnson, but also because it breaks Johnson's fall winning streak at this famous speedway. Hamlin's win on Sunday also broke Johnson's winning ways in this year's Chase as well.

But … Read more

Mark Martin Victorious at NASCAR Chase Race #1

There are some things in life that get better with age, and 50 year old NASCAR driver Mark Martin is (literally) living proof of this adage. Martin is arguably having the best year of his long and successful racing career, and the 2009 season seems to get better for Martin along the way. If you need proof, look no further than yesterday's thrilling victory at the first installment of the NASCAR Chase for the Cup at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The Sylvania 300 kicked off what many consider the "playoffs" of NASCAR, and it was one of … Read more

Jimmie Johnson wins at Martinsville

The past couple of days we've been checking out how NASCAR upstart Jimmie Johnson won this past weekend's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard in Indianapolis. So I figured we'd finish out the week with more spectacular moments from Jimmie Johnson's career.

While his victory at the Brickyard marked Jimmie's third victory of the season, today we take a look at his first win of the 2009 season at the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in Martinsville, VA back in March. This video clip takes a look at the last quarter or so the race while … Read more
