The bigger 7600U comes in at 27 inches and has a full HD resolution. Here, you can spot a slot-loading optical drive.

The touch screen allows up to 64 simultaneous inputs, which could have fascinating implications for multiuser programs. It can also be tilted flat like a table, and rotated for easy access.

Screen quality was excellent at first glance, and the Metro aesthetic translates really well to the large screen. We're looking forward to seeing if usability is up there as well. Diskeeper ExpressCache halves Windows boot time

If you hate waiting for what seems like an eternity for your PC to boot Windows, Diskeeper's ExpressCache might get it going a little faster than molasses.

Recently shown off at Computex Taipei, ExpressCache has been demoed with an 8GB SanDisk SSD to cut program launch times as well.

In the demo below, the Windows desktop appears 15.5 seconds after the OS starts, compared with 33.4 seconds on an identical machine that isn't souped up (BIOS time isn't included). The times it takes for the toolbar to appear are 1.9 and 23.8 seconds, respectively.

In simultaneous launches of Adobe Photoshop, the times are 5.9 and 11.8 seconds.

The SSD acts as a cache for the HDD, and either component can be of any capacity and still work with ExpressCache. … Read more

Asus Padfone in the flesh

As we reported yesterday, the upcoming Asus Padfone has two personalities. On the one hand, it's a regular smartphone that looks just like any of its competitors. On the other hand, by docking it, it can be converted to a tablet with a much larger screen. This rather unusual design allows users to upsize their displays on the fly, while allowing one SIM card to be shared in either mode. Other major benefits include elimination of the need to transfer data between devices and a handy battery charging for the phone.

There's very limited information on the Padfone except that it's based on the Android operating system, supports 3G connectivity, and is due at the end of this year. Click here to read some of our thoughts on the device, and take a look at these close-up shots we snapped at the Computex trade show in Taipei.

Asus reveals G74Sx 17-inch 3D gaming laptop

Asus, a brand known for its Republic of Gamers (ROG) notebooks, announced its G74Sx gaming laptop at the Computex trade show in Taipei today. The G74Sx would be Asus' first 17-inch 3D laptop.

The G74Sx will feature a second-generation quad-core i5 or i7 processor and Nvidia's latest GPU, the GTX 560M. This notebook will also have a full-HD display and use Nvidia's 3D Vision for 3D content.

Like its G72 predecessor, the G74Sx comes with an innovative thermal design that makes use of twin fans at both the front and back of the laptop to maintain constant air flow. Cooling technology is especially important for such a notebook as graphic-intensive games can generate lots of heat.

Also, the company has equipped the G74Sx with several easy-to-use overclocking features for better gaming performance.

Asus has not announced the price or release date for the G74Sx, although more details are expected to be announced soon.
