T-Mobile's quiet silver lining: Monthly 4G prepaid

T-Mobile USA isn't a prepaid carrier, but it might as well be.

While the company's base of contract subscribers -- still a majority of its business and greatest source of revenue -- has been shrinking over the past few quarters, its prepaid business continues to sign up new customers.

In fact, it's been one of the rare bright spots at a carrier that is struggling to get back on its feet after a failed takeover attempt by AT&T. With higher-end customers looking to the other national carriers for better phones (read: iPhone) or 4G LTE … Read more

Boost, Virgin Mobile push phone insurance for $5 per month

Sprint is about to do you a favor, by selling you insurance on your phone.

Both of Sprint's no-contract carriers, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, are offering customers on the Monthly Unlimited plan a "unique opportunity" to insure their phones for $5 a month, even though the phone insurance window typically closes after the first 15 days of buying a new handset.

Don't look at it as a business decision from a company seeking an additional revenue bump in the form of a service add-on. Look at it as a heartfelt offer to you, because your … Read more

Sprint plans to bring WiMax to Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile

Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile customers will be getting 4G -- albeit the older WiMax variant -- in the next quarter.

Sprint Nextel is keeping its older 4G standard alive and plans to bring it to its two prepaid arms next quarter, said Steve Elfman, president of network operations for the carrier. He made his comments during the company's earnings conference call today.

Bringing WiMax to Virgin and Boost gives prepaid customers access to a faster wireless network. Prepaid continues to be a vital part of Sprint's business. In the first quarter, Sprint added 489,000 net prepaid … Read more

Boost's new unlimited plan boasts 'shrinkage' for 3 phones

Boost Mobile is the king of shrinkage, and proud of it.

The no-contract carrier, a Sprint subsidiary, is offering a new $45 nationwide unlimited plan for three of its feature phones: the LG Rumor Reflex, Motorola Theory, and Sanyo Innuendo, from March 29 through May 31.

Boost's plan, which gives you all the voice minutes and texting you can use -- but which does not include Web surfing or e-mail -- also incorporates the carrier's Shrinkage Plan, a scheme that rewards on-time payments.

After every six cumulative payments, your bill drops another $5 a total of three times. … Read more

Messaging LG Rumor Reflex jumps on Sprint, Boost in March

Sprint hasn't forgotten about its family of LG Rumor phones. In fact, it's giving it a one-two punch.

Today the carrier, along with its no-contract brand Boost Mobile, announced that they'd both carry the LG Rumor Reflex, an eco-friendly feature phone geared for those who aren't looking for a smartphone, but want something more powerful than the absolute basics.

The 3G handset follows last year's LG Rumor Touch with a 3-inch WQVGA touch-screen display and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. There's also a 2-megapixel camera with video capture, Bluetooth and GPS support, and room for … Read more

JetBoost boosts old and slow PCs

Remember how fast your brand-new PC felt? And how quickly it seemed to slow down to "same old"? While hardware keeps advancing, some of the lost zip might be because of resource-hogging processes running in the background, such as update checkers and Windows services you don't need. JetBoost is a free system utility that scans your PC for stuff that can slow you down and shows you where and what it is so that you can decide what to stop.

JetBoost offers three boost modes: Work, Games, and Custom, with specific groups of processes and services to … Read more

Samsung Replenish review: Boost Mobile's cheapest Android phone

Boost Mobile isn't just about offering phones off-contract, it's also about style. So if you're a phone that lands in Boost's lineup, you might be the hot stuff.

Or you could just be a good bargain. The Samsung Replenish was an entry-level Android phone to begin with when it first emerged last spring for Sprint. It grew from Android 2.2 Froyo to 2.3 Gingerbread since then, which keeps it pretty fresh.

Not so fresh is the smaller screen, which can make reading a challenge. I'm on the fence about the portrait-mode QWERTY keyboard, … Read more

Most, but not all, of the cases in this roundup are designed to double the battery life … Read more

Sprint plans to bring 4G LTE to prepaid...eventually

LAS VEGAS--Sprint Nextel could bring 4G LTE to the masses in a real way: through the hot prepaid market.

A prepaid 4G LTE strategy is just one of the ways the company plans to set itself apart from its larger competitors, according to Steve Elfman, president of network operations at Sprint. The company's continued support of unlimited plans, as well as its ongoing green initiative, are two others, he added.

Sprint, which held a long advantage with 4G WiMax, is suddenly playing catch up with a newer version of 4G called LTE. The company is trying to make up … Read more
