Play piano on your PC with ButtonBeats Virtual Piano Black

ButtonBeats Virtual Piano Black is a cool Flash app that simulates a piano keyboard on your desktop. You can play it with your mouse or with optional keyboard controls. By tapping out notes in a numbered sequence, even total beginners can play simple tunes like "Happy Birthday" and "Jingle Bells" to more complex melodies such as those by Mozart, Bach, and the Beatles.

Virtual Piano's interface does indeed look like a real piano keyboard, albeit a reduced one, with attractive highlights on the black keys, which are functional. That was a good sign since we'… Read more

More HTC handsets with Beats headphones? Probably not

Don't expect HTC to pack Beats headphones or earbuds with the Evo 4G LTE -- or any of its smartphones for the time being.

HTC is shelving the idea. One lesson the company learned from last year's Sensation XL and the Rezound: customers don't really choose smartphones based on the headphones -- even headphones with a brand as recognizable as Beats.

"An accessory like the headphone doesn't factor in when someone is buying a smartphone," Martin Fichter, an HTC product executive, told CNET. "If they want a Beats headphone, they'll buy it … Read more

Plantronics makes small bet with new BackBeat Go Bluetooth stereo headset

It's hard to design really small wireless Bluetooth earphones because you have to cram a battery and some extra electronics into a compact housing the size of something that's not much bigger than, well, an earbud.

That's a challenge Plantronics has managed to overcome with its new $99.99 BackBeat Go wireless stereo headset, which the company has just started shipping to stores. It's one of the smallest and lightest stereo Bluetooth headsets out there, with two slightly oversize earbuds joined by a flat, fettuccine wire that's designed to cut down on tangles. … Read more

Take that, Dr. Dre: AT&T ships $99 non-Beats wireless speaker

If you've been watching "American Idol," you've probably seen a commercial or two for the $399 Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable audio system, which allows you to stream music wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or tablet and is available exclusively through AT&T stores. But few people know that AT&T actually has its own portable Bluetooth speaker sans Beats logo. And it's shipping now.

It's called the LoudSpeak'r.

No, that's not a typo. The LoudSpeak'r follows in the footsteps of the Casio G'zOne (see 20 worst-named tech products for reference), … Read more

Beats Electronics has a plan and it's much bigger than Mog

If Beats Electronics acquires Mog, the maker of the popular headphones has plans that go way beyond subscription music.

CNET broke the news three weeks ago that Mog, an also-ran subscription music service, was for sale and AllThingsD yesterday reported that Beats intends to acquire Mog, but the deal has yet to close.

A Mog spokesperson did not respond to an interview request. A Beats representative wasn't immediately available.

Sources close to Beats say managers intend to build a Web store that will sell music, headphones, and numerous other products. Apparently, the idea is to cash in on the … Read more

Rumor Has It, Ep. 25: We're just gonna wait for Windows 8 (podcast)

Back on Episode 3, Emily was on vacation, and put all her faith and trust in Sharon Vaknin. We took a vote on whether Microsoft would reveal the next-generation Xbox at E3 2012 (Sharon said yes, I said no). Well this week, Microsoft told everyone not to expect a new Xbox anytime soon, which means I won a point! It also means that Sharon and Emily are in a fight.

Today's show gets wild and crazy with two Windows 8 rumors, but no iPad rumors. Imagine that. Will Lenovo be the first to launch a Windows 8 tablet? Rumors … Read more

Breaking and entering just got groovier

Remember Vincent Cassel as the breakdancing burglar from the movie "Ocean's Twelve"? He played a classy art thief who weaved his way through security by dancing around a series of laser beams. His character blended the art of thievery with rhythmic precision. In no way do we at Download.com condone any sort of theft...outside the walls of Clockwork Mansion.

Beat Sneak Bandit trains players in the art of breaking in with breaking beats. Duke Clockface has stolen all the clocks, so it's up to you as the Bandit to infiltrate Clockwork Mansion and … Read more

Featuring a pair of easy-carry handles, the speaker system comes with a remote control and Bluetooth connectivity and gets its power from six D-cell batteries. So in other words, AT&T has essentially become a retail partner for a rebranded Beatbox Portable.

As part of today's announcement, AT&… Read more

Thanks to Beats by Dr. Dre $300+ headphones are 'cool'

Remember when expensive headphones, let's say anything over $100, were never big sellers, and only audiophiles bought them?

That's no longer true--judging by the number of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones I see on the streets and subways in New York--pricey headphones have reached the mainstream. That's radical. Bose did pretty well with its QuietComfort noise-canceling headphones long before Dre jumped into the headphone business, but the Beats stand out in a crowd.

The reasons for Dre's success aren't purely based on sound quality, it's more that the other manufacturers' headphones sorely lacked any sense of street style. … Read more
