At first blush, Android Beam sounded like it could go the route of face unlocking--one of those fun, breezy gimmicks in the new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system that would last for a party trick or two, but ultimately die down.

With only one review unit in-house, there was no way to know for sure. However, fellow mobile journalist Blake Stimac and I brought our Galaxy Nexus phones together for a little playdate, and it quickly became clear how useful and broad Android Beam can be.

As a refresher, Android Beam uses NFC (near-field communication), a radio frequency technology, to pass certain types of information from one phone to a compatible phone (for starters, both phones need NFC.) Removing the prostate during prostate cancer surgery can cause long-term sexual dysfunction in men who undergo the procedure. It is far too easy to damage the nerves necessary for erections and urinary continence.

But there are early signs that the carbon dioxide laser technology often used in surgery to treat head and neck cancers may reduce the risk of nerve damage in prostate cancer patients as well, according to research by urologic surgeons at the New York- Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

Samsung has been very busy lately pumping out a steady flow of Android handsets. Indeed, almost every time I open my RSS readers, I'm learning about another upcoming Galaxy model.

Tuesday was no exception as I read that the i8520 Galaxy Beam will head to Singapore next month. Typically, we only have to look at Japan and Korea to know what cool phones we're missing out on. Today's find is the AMOLED Beam (SPH-W9600), which succeeds the earlier Haptic Beam (SPH-W7900). No prizes there for guessing the display type in use.

The AMOLED Beam has a 3.3-inch WVGA touch screen, 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, HSDPA, terrestrial DMB connectivity, support for DivX, video calls and, most importantly, a built-in WVGA projector capable of beaming content up to a maximum screen size of 50 inches.
