Analyst: iPad forcing rival tablet makers to cut back

Facing unrelenting competition from Apple's iPad, many rival tablet makers will build fewer tablets than originally planned, according to a J.P. Morgan analyst.

In a research note released yesterday, analyst Mark Moskowitz said that non-Apple tablet makers have gotten an early "dose of reality" by failing to produce a high-volume tablet that comes close to matching the demand for the iPad.

As a result of the "weak showing" of products such as Motorola's Xoom, Research In Motion's PlayBook, and Samsung's Galaxy Tab, many tablet makers have cut back on their plans … Read more

Acer chides Microsoft over tablet maker restrictions

Microsoft is placing "troublesome" restrictions on hardware makers working on Windows 8 tablets, according to both Acer's president and its CEO.

Speaking yesterday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, Acer President Jim Wong said Microsoft had chosen five chip manufacturers--Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments--to provide processors for the next generation of Windows tablets, according to The Wall Street Journal. Taking it a step further, Microsoft then decided to limit each chipmaker to supplying chips to no more than two hardware makers, a move that Wong sees as restrictive.

"The industry does … Read more

Acer GD235HZ review: 3D monitor with gorilla feet

3D is still touted as the missing ingredient that will take our entertainment experiences, be they movies or games, to the next level.

I've yet to be persuaded that it will make such a giant difference, but it doesn't stop many companies from dipping their toes into the 3D waters in an attempt to get consumers to buy more stuff. On the PC gaming front, Nvidia has led the charge for the last few years with its 3D Vision Kit and has done a good job getting the technology out there while garnering support from game developers.

For its 3D solution, Nvidia uses active-shutter lenses, which require power and can be expensive. Later this year, both LG and Samsung will release 3D monitors that use passive 3D glasses that require no additional power source and as a result, are a lot cheaper. … Read more

Android issues reportedly to delay Acer A100 tablet

Compatibility problems between Android 3.0 and Acer's 7-inch Iconia A100 tablet will reportedly delay the launch of the new tablet, according to a story in DigiTimes.

Originally set to start selling the new tablet by May or June, Acer is now rescheduling the launch to an August-September time frame.

Since Android 3.0 Honeycomb was designed specifically for larger-screen tablets, Acer has discovered a variety of apps in the new OS that are incompatible with 7-inch screens, claims DigiTimes, citing industry sources. On its end, Google is reportedly trying to fix other issues, also putting a crimp in … Read more

iPad taking some bite out of PC sales, says iSuppli

Demand for the iPad and other tablets has taken a certain toll on PC sales, thought it's mostly the lower-end Netbook market that has suffered, according to data released yesterday by IHS iSuppli.

Worldwide, PC shipments slipped to 81.3 million during the first quarter, a drop of only 0.3 percent from the 81.6 million shipped in the year-ago quarter. Looking at the top five global PC vendors, HP, Dell, and Acer all saw a decline in shipments from a year ago, while Lenovo and Toshiba watched their shipments rise.

Among the five, Acer took the biggest hit, with its shipments dropping by more than 20 percent from 2010's first quarter. IHS iSuppli attributed Acer's decline to its heavy focus on selling Netbook-style PCs, which it sees as the segment most directly affected by the demand for the iPad and other tablets.

"The increasing momentum of the media tablet market, led by the iPad, is creating a difficult environment for the PC industry," IHS analyst Matthew Wilkins said in a statement. "All the attention surrounding tablets contributed to weak consumer demand for PCs in the first quarter."

However, the analyst admits there's still uncertainty over exactly how much of an impact tablets are having on the PC market.… Read more

LaCie unveils Windows Server-based 5-bay NAS

It's been a while since I last had opportunity to take on a Windows Server-based NAS server, such as the Acer Aspire EasyStore or HP's MediaSmart series. And now when Microsoft fanboys are starting to worry that the company has abandoned the NAS server market, LaCie has announced its first network storage server that's based on an NAS-specific operating system (OS) from the software giant, the 5big Storage Server.

The new NAS server is powered by Microsoft's Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Standard operating system, which was introduced in October 2010 and is based on Windows … Read more

Tablet prizefight: Acer vs. Asus

The year started out with only one Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet on the horizon (the Motorola Xoom). Today, nearly halfway through the year, we have so many Honeycomb tablets flying around CNET that it's hard to keep them all straight. More importantly, the prices on these things are steadily creeping downward, making them a more compelling alternative to Apple's lowest-priced iPad 2. Two of the latest low-cost Honeycomb tablets to hit the shelves are the Acer Iconia Tab A500 and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. The only trouble is, it's almost impossible to tell the two … Read more
