Nine-inch Asus Eee PC lands in the Lab--barely bigger than its 7-inch cousin

The postman brought us a late-afternoon present on this rainy (here in NYC, at least) Friday--the much-anticipated new 9-inch version of the Asus Eee PC netbook-style laptop.

At first glance, it's easy to mistake this for the popular 7-inch version, as the two share a nearly identical footprint. The 9-inch is bigger by maybe a quarter inch, and weighs 2.2 pounds, compared to the original's 2.04 pounds. Opening it up, you can see the display now fills more of the available space, moving the speakers away from the side of the screen.

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, … Read more

Asus Eee PC 900 launching 5/12 in the U.S. at $549

The upcoming 9-inch version of the popular Asus Eee PC has already been spotted in Europe and Asia, but details about an American launch were scarce--until now.

Sources at Asus tell us the Eee PC 900, which we discussed in detail earlier this week, will be available in the U.S. starting May 12 for $549. That's a little more than the $500 figure everyone was assuming, and certainly more than the $399 7-inch version.

For the extra money, you do get more system RAM (1GB vs. 512MB), a higher 1,024x600 screen resolution, and more solid state hard-drive … Read more

Nine-inch Asus Eee PC 900 details unveiled

We've been spilling a lot of virtual ink about the popular 7-inch Asus Eee PC lately, but the real buzz is about that system's follow-up, a slightly bigger 9-inch version Asus has been teasing us with since last year.

It's now officially called the Asus Eee PC 900, and the first reviews are starting to trickle out in the U.K., where the system has a set release date of May 1, although we don't have an official U.S. price or release date yet.

According to Asus, the new system adds more than just a … Read more

Sony 24.6MP SLR on display in Tokyo

The Photo District News' blog is pointing to a post on Masterchong.com that has photos of Sony's upcoming 24.6-megapixel, full-35mm-frame sensor SLR from the Photo Imaging Expo in Tokyo, Japan. From what I can tell, the photos seem to be of the same prototype that was shown at PMA earlier this year.

While Masterchong.com refers to the SLR as the DSLR-A900 and says that it'll be officially announced at either the IFA or Photokina trade shows later this year, our Sony contact for the U.S. said that the company has not released an official … Read more

Sony flagship Alpha 900 DSLR breaks cover

Continuing their march upward in digital SLRs, Sony has for the first time allowed a hands-on look at a prototype of their Alpha 900. They had previously shown it "under glass" at photo shows.

There are a few noteworthy things:

Sensor: Holy moly, a 25 megapixel full frame sensor! Be sure to bring lots of memory cards, because you are going to fill them up fast, especially if shooting RAW (and as a pro, why wouldn't you be?). This is twice as big as the 12.2MP sensor in the competing Nikon D3, currently the darling of … Read more

Photos: Sony Ericsson GSMA

Sony Ericsson made a strong showing at the GSMA World Congress in Barcelona. The company announced several new models, all of which make an effort to stand out. And you can see them here in our Sony Ericsson GSMA slide show. The biggest news is its new Xperia X1. The first Sony Ericsson Windows Mobile phone, it features a full alphabetic keyboard with a unique "arc" slider design. The Sony Ericsson booth staff isn't letting the two Z1s we saw out of their hands, so we didn't get a good chance to play with it yet. … Read more

Sony Ericsson redfines the touch screen with its new G-series

As the GSMA World Congress begins, Sony Ericsson has proven again that it can surprise us. While we expected that it would spend much of its time in Barcelona concentrating on its strong points, like a new Walkman phone, it instead introduced a completely new cell phone line with its G700 and G900.

Designed as "touch-screen organizers with a broad appeal," the G700 and G900 are Symbian smartphones that are designed a busy, on-the-go audience. The company said it was trying to snag a new segment of customers with the two handsets, and from I can tell, it … Read more

Verizon's new Samsung FlipShot

Heads up, everyone, Samsung has announced another new cell phone. I know that's a shocker; it's not as if the company has announced any other new models in this short holiday week, but try to contain your surprise. The new Samsung FlipShot, aka the SCH-U900, is a high-end multimedia phone for Verizon Wireless. Not only does it offer the full slate of 3G features, but also it marks the return of the swiveling flip phone, a trend which briefly climaxed two years ago. Though it differs from the previous Samsung SCH-A970 in that the front flap can rotate … Read more
