Samsung ships 1 million Galaxy Note devices in two months

Samsung said it has shipped one million Galaxy Notes since the mobile gadget hit the market in late October. But the electronics giant didn't say how many it has actually sold.

Part smartphone and part tablet, the Note has seen a rise in sales across Europe and Asia, particularly France, Germany, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, according to a Samsung press release displayed today on Flickr. Samsung called the Note's sales "notable" since the device is creating a new market for a cross between a phone and tablet.

The Note sailed to the shores of the U.K.Read more

Samsung announces Ice Cream Sandwich plans for Galaxy line

Now that it's launched Ice Cream Sandwich on its Galaxy Nexus, Samsung today became the latest hardware maker to outline Android 4.0 updates for its remaining smartphones and tablets.

A posting on the company's blog tells us that most, if not all, of its Galaxy device lineup from 2011 will see Ice Cream Sandwich. So if you're keeping track, that will include the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Note, and a number of Galaxy Tab models.

The Galaxy S II smarpthones and Galaxy Note should be at the head of the line for the first quarter … Read more

The skinny on big-screen smartphones

If you're eyeing a Samsung Galaxy Note but worry whether its 5.3-inch display makes it "pocketable," we've got you covered.

We put five powerful smartphones--the Droid Razr (4.3-inch), the Galaxy Nexus (4.65-inch), the HTC Sensation XL (4.7-inch), the Dell Streak (5-inch), and the Samsung Galaxy Note--to a pocket test.

Unfortunately, our mobile phone reviewer Aloysius wears (relatively) baggy jeans, so if your wardrobe only consists of skinnies, this might not apply.

See if these phones are a comfortable fit for you, then let us know your ideal handset size in the comments below.

Samsung releases best trade show tchotchke ever?

BERLIN--OK, perhaps the headline is a bit of an exaggeration--I've seen companies give away hundreds of $1,000 SLRs at conferences. But I have to hand it to Samsung today at the IFA trade show here.

To show off that it's entering the flash memory card market in the United States, the company created a customized miniature aluminum suitcase. Inside was a foam pad holding an SD card and a MicroSD card. Here's a video showing it all:

The company presumably selected the design to impart a sense of ruggedness: the cards are billed as shockproof and … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Note (hands-on)

BERLIN--With so many models available, it's hard to stand out in the Android smartphone market these days. But Samsung found a way today with the Galaxy Note.

First, this Gingerbread device has a Super AMOLED screen that's 5.3 inches diagonally--enough to bump almost into the tiny tablet range. Second, it's got a stylus that lets people take notes, annotate screenshots, and draw. Samsung announced the Galaxy Note today at the IFA electronics show here.

Dell's Streak was a similarly sized Android phone that was largely a dud in the marketplace, but Samsung thinks it knows consumer desires. I tried the device today and came away more impressed than I thought I'd be. The Galaxy Note has a nice screen, a fast dual-core processor, and works as an ordinary smartphone. I don't think it'll be a mainstream hit, but a certain niche might enjoy it. … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Note: Big phone or tiny tablet?

BERLIN--With its new Galaxy Note, Samsung is adding another size category to its already broad range of Android devices.

The company already had more conventionally sized Android smartphones with its Galaxy S line, larger tablets such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, and intermediate ones such as the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab and the new Galaxy Tab 7.7. The Galaxy Note is basically a very large smartphone, though, with a 5.3-inch screen and Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, which is designed for phones, not tablets.
