Court documents posted in fed's Sun, HP kickback lawsuit

Yesterday we reported that the U.S. Justice Department had joined a case against Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and Accenture alleging that they paid unlawful kickbacks in federal purchases.

The complaint alleges that the defendants are using affiliate relationships "to enrich themselves through a kickback scheme" in violations of the False Claims Act. The Justice Department is asking for an injunction, civil penalties, and attorneys' fees, and did not act against Dell and EDS, though they are named in the existing suit.

Who's the biggest PC maker ever?

In the first quarter of 2007, Hewlett-Packard officially entered the ranks of the PC giants.

HP racked up a 19.1 percent worldwide market share by shipping 11.2 million computers, according to IDC figures released Wednesday. That effectively ties the 2Q 2006 high-water mark for Dell. In that quarter, Dell scored a 19.14 percent market share, but only shipped about 10 million PCs.

HP announces new Deskjet and Photosmart printers

Today, HP unveiled five new printers: three Deskjets and one Photosmart.

- The HP Photosmart C4280 is a three-function unit (print, scan, copy) that prints black at 30ppm and color at 23ppm. It offers a 1.5-inch color LCD, memory card slots, borderless 4x6 photo prints, and optional six-color printing. The $100 printer will be available in May.

- The Deskjet D2460 is a $50 single-function inkjet printer that's available now. It offers 20ppm black and 14ppm color printing and optional six-color photo printing.

HP EdgeLine CM8060: Super-fast printing

HP has raised its pimp hand to smack its competition with a brand-new printing technology. Known as EdgeLine, the new system can print a massive 60 pages per minute in mono and 50 pages per minute in color--it's the Ferrari Enzo of printing.

Crave witnessed the official unveiling of two EdgeLine-equipped machines, the CM8060 and CM8050, at an event in Paris yesterday (get us!). HP bigwig Jan Riecher hit a switch, some curtains pulled back and before us stood the mother of all printers--a forklift-sized behemoth that rivaled Mr. Bean for sheer beigeness.

HP has gaming handheld in the works

Hewlett-Packard is working on a gaming handheld that could let players use their surroundings as a backdrop for an immersive game.

The company unveiled a commercial for "Mscape," its gaming prototype, that featured a number of young hipster gamers roaming San Francisco while playing a game on Mscape that used cues from their environment as triggers to unlock new levels or bonuses. "We want to get kids off the couch," Rahul Sood, chief technology officer of HP's gaming division, said during a presentation in San Francisco.
