Windows Home Server really available, sort of

Bill Gates announced Windows Home Server to much fanfare at January's Consumer Electronics Show.

The energy seems to have dwindled some during the product's elongated path to market over the past year. Microsoft finalized the code back in July, but HP said it would wait for an update to the software before releasing its MediaSmart server, in what was seen as the biggest endorsement of the product.

Red Hat and HP team up to secure the US federal government

Red Hat just concluded its Red Hat Government User's Conference, but it also announced an initiative with HP that will persist beyond the one-day conference: Multi-Level Security (MLS) Services for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

At the core of MLS Services is the fact that HP has achieved Common Criteria certification at the EAL 4 level with the Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP) -- certifications that mean HP, and now Red Hat, are can meet high-level government security requirements. Common Criteria certifications, for instance, are key government certifications that ensure a degree of security compliance against known criteria.

The expectation is that by raising the level of security in its products, Red Hat can lower barriers to open-source adoption.

Notebooks continue to drive growth in worldwide PC market

Shipments of PCs to the saturated U.S. market may be declining somewhat, but the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa) gave the worldwide PC market a big boost in the third quarter, according to figures released Wednesday by IDC.

PC shipments grew 15.5 percent worldwide in the past quarter. Growth in the EMEA regions, led by Hewlett-Packard and Acer, was paced by a strong demand for notebooks and back-to-school promotions, leading to the best growth rates in the region in the past two years.

OAKLAND, Calif.--Former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Carly Fiorina, in a long-scheduled presentation Tuesday night as part of a Bay Area lecture series, made no specific mention of her political aspirations.

YouTube, HP team up on filmmaking competition

This post has been updated to include a statement from YouTube on why the Project Direct contest is only open to Web users in seven countries.

Taking a run through the early, underpopulated hours of the DigitalLife expo here in New York, we were pleased to see at least three new laptops that mobile gaming fans will be interested in.

Windows Home Server update coming Tuesday

Microsoft said Monday that it has finished a planned update to its Windows Home Server software, paving the way for Hewlett-Packard to finish its product based on the new operating system.

HP, which had expected to be one of the first to offer a home server based on Microsoft's software, earlier said that it would wait for this update before releasing its MediaSmart Server. The changes are designed to improve the products "usability and out-of box experience," Microsoft said.
