Evesham wants you to watch a little TV

Most of the major TV makers seem determined to create flat screens of Godzillan proportions, but Evesham has apparently decided to zig where others zag with its latest offering. The U.K. company's TV-930 doesn't have the smallest LCD--9.2 inches--but it weighs less than 1kg (around 2 pounds). It also manages to integrate speakers into its modest frame, which Pocket-lint says can be connected to a DVD player, camera or game console.

The lightweight portability could make some sense if one needed to move the TV around the house regularly. If not, we can't understand why … Read more

AMD has big plans for small computers

At CES 2007, AMD announced a plan to standardize the motherboard, chassis and basic components for those popular "small-form-factor" PCs. The goal of its new DTX standard is to help component and system makers focus on common layouts for motherboard inputs, mounting holes and other design elements to encourage more companies to carry Shuttle-style and even smaller PCs. Motherboard manufacturers Asus and MSI have already committed to producing DTX hardware, and AMD expects to send a reference design to system builders some time this quarter.

If you recall Intel's BTX initiative, you'll remember that it was … Read more

Tiny amp promises big sound

This little guy is worth keeping around the house as a conversation piece if nothing else: You can keep your friends guessing its use for hours until you turn it on.

It may look like a toy, but this "Nano Head" is actually a powerful amp, according to distributor Zachary Vex. And not just any amp, he says, but the "world's smallest production tube amp."

This could come in particularly handy if you're trying to get just the right tone for your riffs. Because, let's face it, you'll need all the help … Read more

HyperOffice takes on Outlook and Exchange

Outlook can do a lot, but you've got to do a lot to get it there. Very small businesses that aren't willing to invest the time or money in setting up a slick Outlook/Exchange installation can now get decent communication suites online. Previously I've covered Joyent (see also their limerick), and most recently I got pitched on HyperOffice, another online suite with email, a calendar, a contact manager, and collaboration features.

I took the suite for a quick spin. It's got solid workgroup functionality and a lot of the collaboration features that small businesses will … Read more

Google Apps for Your Domain gets customizable start page

Google just put a new feature in its Google Apps for Your Domain suite of services: a "start page." This is a new corporate version of Google's existing personal start page, for people inside a company using Google's apps for e-mail and calendaring. The differences between the standard Google start page and this product are that administrators can design the page, can lock down all or part of it, and can give it a custom URL.

Setting up a company intranet page is certainly easy with this tool, but Google's business services are still a … Read more

Rage against the small machine

So we're on this anti-small kick. Yeah, that's right. Small is not always better in our book, especially where our increasingly feeble eyesight is concerned.

Last week, for example, we kvetched about the 3- by 2-inch Cube Mini media player, which we're sure we would lose in a week. But at least it made good use of its cramped space, with a 2.4-inch screen that occupied most of its surface area. Then today, we spotted this TA 454 player that is truly Lilliputian in stature, which The Raw Feed describes as smaller than a car key remote. … Read more
