Reported heat issues with new iPad are most likely due to a combination of more backlights and more power needed to drive the backlights, an expert told CNET. This follows a CNET report attributing extra heat to the new iPad's A5X chip, also.

Apple has doubled the number of LEDs in the new iPad to achieve the same brightness as the iPad 2, driving up power requirements and therefore heat, Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, said in a phone interview today.

Apple now getting iPad Retina displays from LG too

Apple has begun to get additional supply of the new iPad's 9.7-inch Retina screen from LG Display, a NPD DisplaySearch analyst told CNET.

To date, Samsung has been the sole supplier of the 2,048x1,536 display, the new iPad's marquee feature.

"LGD (LG Display) is qualified. So in March they will ship a few hundred thousand units," said Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. "That is the typical cadence. You do a few hundred thousand units one month and then a few million after that," he said.

Apple raises 3G/4G download limit to 50MB

iOS users who need to download a beefy app over 3G or 4G now have a better shot.

Apple yesterday bumped up the download limit for content over a cell connection to a healthy 50 megabytes. Previously, iOS users were restricted to downloading items no larger than 20MB unless they did so over Wi-Fi.
