Android: The cable guy analogy

Let's see, it's 5:00 and the cable guy was supposed to show up at 1:00. And, oh yeah, where's my Android update?

I hear Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) is great. I've been hearing how great ICS is since October (when it was released).

Which is about the same time I got my Motorola Xyboard (aka, Xoom 2) -- with Honeycomb. You know, Android 3.0, the old version of Android.

Think about it. Motorola announced a brand-new tablet design just as ICS was coming out but saddled it with Honeycomb.

So, I'… Read more

Motorola announces the 'lifeproof' Defy Pro

Not every rugged or semi-rugged phone has to look like a rubber tire.

Yesterday, Motorola announced its newest handset, the Defy Pro, which can resist dust, water, and scratches, but still looks sleek enough to be your day-to-day phone.

It has a 2.7-inch Gorilla Glass touch-screen display, and has a four-row physical QWERTY keyboard.

The handset also has three different "dashboards" or user profiles, which include outdoor, hiking, and workout view. These views give you details on the weather, track your hiking trails, and monitor your workouts, respectively.

This Android device has Bluetooth capabilities, comes loaded with … Read more

ITC delays ruling on U.S. ban of Xbox

It looks like the Xbox won't be banned from the U.S. just yet.

The U.S. International Trade Commission is putting off a ruling on whether sales of the gaming console should be prohibited in the states owing to infringement of patents held by Google and its Motorola Mobility unit, Reuters reports.

In late May, an ITC judge recommended the ban, based on his ruling that the Xbox infringes patents regarding wireless Net connectivity, video compression, and other technologies. The ITC had been expected to release a decision on the proposed ban in August but has instead sent … Read more

FTC investigating Google over Motorola patents

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether Google's Motorola Mobility unit is improperly blocking access to industry-standard technology that should be licensed to competitors according to traditional industry and legal practice.

A source says Google has been served by the FTC with a civil investigative demand -- similar to a subpoena. The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg, which said the government is also seeking information from Apple and Microsoft.

The issue involves so-called frand patents -- "fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory" -- that cover technology essential to the smooth operation of an industry. As CNET's Roger … Read more

Judge: Ban on Motorola phone sales could be 'catastrophic'

A U.S. judge strongly questioned Apple's bid for an injunction against Motorola smartphones today, saying a ban on sales could have "catastrophic effects."

Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. District of Northern Illinois, who is presiding over the hearing to determine whether to grant Apple injunctive relief against Motorola phones that allegedly infringe on Apple patents, also said the U.S. patent system was in a state of "chaos," according to a Reuters account of the hearing.

Earlier this month, Posner canceled Apple's patent infringement jury trial against Google's Motorola Mobility … Read more
