Buzz Out Loud 1215: Law & Order: Lost Prototypes Unit (podcast)

Dun DUN! Police break down the door of a Gizmodo editor's house looking for evidence of some sort of crime involving the lost iPhone prototype ... meanwhile, Nokia has to kind of pathetically blog about how someone took a prototype of the Nokia N8 and they would really, really like it back. It's a weird world out there. Also, the "Boy Genius" has been outed, Samsung might make a Google TV, and we're storing your data for you in Unicorn Town.

Report: Google working on Google TV devices

Google has apparently decided on the next place to extend its reach: the living room.

Google, Intel, and Sony are working on a set-top box running Google's Android software called Google TV, according to a report from The New York Times. They are also collaborating on televisions with technology from the three companies, with Google software serving as the interface on the devices.

Google declined to comment on what it called "rumor and speculation."

The television has been the holy grail for the PC and Internet industries for years, with little success. Intel tried mightily over the … Read more

Quick video downloader

Ares Tube is a simple tool for downloading online videos. While it has a directionless layout, its results are strong enough to earn a recommendation.

The program's interface is a bit frustrating to use, since it provides no Help file or instructions. Luckily, there are so few command options that some experimenting yielded a fairly solid understanding of its basic operation. The program looks like a typical Web browser, but with a built-in queue for downloading videos. Ares Tube claims to work with more than a dozen video sites, including some of the most popular ones, like YouTube and … Read more

Google to track TiVo viewing habits

Google and TiVo know you accidentally watch a few ads while fast-forwarding through the commercial breaks of your recorded programs, and they'd like a little more data to back that up.

Google plans to add TiVo "television viewing data" to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company's attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their … Read more

YouTube making jump to TV screens

Like everyone else, YouTube hopes to make its way from the PC to a more prime entertainment location--the TV set.

Google's video service is rolling out a new browser feature, called YouTube XL, designed to present YouTube videos on big screens, company managers said Tuesday.

During a demonstration before a handful of media, YouTube showed how XL is designed for people who have hooked up their TVs to their laptops or video game consoles, such as Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3.

How does it differ from YouTube's typical Web page?

It's a much more stripped down … Read more

Google cashes in at television upfronts

Google crashed the weeklong television "upfronts" Thursday, getting commitments from advertising agencies to place spots on Google TV Ads.

Hollywood Reporter notes this is the first time Google has sold airtime during the upfronts, when advertisers and marketers gather in New York to check out what the television networks--including CBS, publisher of this Web site--have in store for us this fall. (Check out Jimmy Kimmel's hilarious monologue if you haven't yet.)

Google number-crunching to find good TV ads

Google believes the TV remote control is the next mouse, at least when it comes to measuring the fickle behavior of TV viewers and Web surfers regarding advertising.

Google TV Ads has been a formal project for a little over a year, and the company released new data Thursday showing how it's trying to help television advertisers quantify the impact of a good TV ad versus a bad one. Google has been quietly measuring the viewing habits of Dish Network customers, including how likely they are to watch all the way through a compelling, relevant ad or click away … Read more

Report: Google testing one-stop shop for video ads

Google is seeking to turn its TV advertising program into a one-stop shop.

The Internet search giant is currently testing Google TV Ads Online, an interface designed to enable advertisers to purchase ads through its nearly one-year-old Google TV Ads program, its YouTube site, and, eventually, Internet sites running video, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

A limited group of advertisers is currently testing the service, which could debut in the months to come, the Journal noted.

Google's move to develop a one-stop system for TV and video advertising comes at a time when consumers are … Read more

Google to sell TV ad time for NBC Universal

Google is partnering with NBC Universal to act as broker for TV advertising times on some NBC cable channels.

NBC Universal will offer advertising time from several of its cable networks for Google to sell through its Google TV Ads service as part of a multiyear advertising, research, and technology partnership, the companies announced Monday in a joint statement.

"With the addition of NBC Universal inventory, advertisers using the Google TV Ads platform can reach NBCU Cable's national audience and gain access to viewership data at an unprecedented scale," NBC Universal and Google said in a statement. … Read more
