Sneak peek at Asus' bamboo laptops

Crave unabashedly lusted after a DVD player encased in bamboo so you can imagine how we felt upon viewing Asus' planned "EcoBook" in the same finish.

Asus is no stranger to luxury goods, as it has shown in its coziness with the likes of Lamborghini and Prada. But this is the first time we've seen the company create an eco-chic line of products. (Bamboo grows incredibly fast, and much of its commercial variety comes from plantations, not wild habitats.)

How, exactly, does one make a laptop out of bamboo? Glad you asked. Our extended family at Crave … Read more

Fujitsu's new 13-incher

The 13-inch laptop is the perfect size for some people, as legions of MacBook fans will tell you. It's more portable than a mainstream 15-inch system, and easier to type on (and read) than a 12-inch ultraportable. Fujitsu wants to tempt business users with the new 13-inch LifeBook S2210, a thin and light laptop that packs in lots of business-friendly features.

Basic specs include an AMD Turion 64 X2 CPU, ATI Radeon X1150 graphics, a fingerprint reader, TPM 1.2 (Trusted Platform Module), and an accelerometer to freeze the hard drive in case of falls. The S2210 starts at … Read more

FlipStart flips into view

The Vulcan FlipStart, an ultramobile PC first announced in 2003, is apparently a little closer to store shelves, despite a longstanding reputation as vaporware.

The gang over at PCMag.com actually have a full review of the not-yet-released FlipStart E-1001S--a system that looks more like a shrunk-down ultraportable laptop than a Sidekick-style UMPC such as the Sony VAIO UX.

The E-1001S flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a 5.6-inch screen with a 1024x600 resolution. With a Pentium M CPU, a 30GB hard drive, and only 512MB of RAM, it's probably not going to be … Read more

Lenovo recalls 100,000 ThinkPad batteries

Here we go again. Last year, Lenovo recalled more than half a million batteries as a participant in the widespread Sony laptop battery recall that included Apple, Dell, Toshiba, and others. Lenovo today announced it is recalling 100,000 Sanyo batteries that it sells with its ThinkPad laptops.

The company has received four complaints about lithium ion batteries overheating and damaging ThinkPad laptops when the batteries were dropped or otherwise struck on the corner. The batteries in question are the extended, nine-cell battery, which Lenovo sells as an upgrade option on three ThinkPad lines: the R Series (R60 and R60e), … Read more

Broken laptop panel? Fix it yourself!

We're as big a fan of the DIY scene as anyone else, and it's one thing to replace a faulty hard drive or video card in a desktop PC, but replacing your laptop's LCD screen is another matter entirely.

If you're one of those brave souls who would dare to crack open your laptop case, a blogger named Charlie has put detailed step-by-step instructions on his personal blog, Defectivekit.com, for taking on this intimidating task.

First off, we naturally echo the author's disclaimer that this isn't really something you should do yourself if … Read more

Bigger MacBooks coming soon?

There's nothing like a good leak from "sources in Taiwan" to get tongues wagging about the latest Apple developments. We've heard talk of everything from ultraportable MacBook Pros to Mac tablets, but the most reliable rumor these days seems to be around a 15.4-inch MacBook, similar in size to the popular 15.4-inch MacBook Pro.

According to DigiTimes, the 15.4-inch MacBooks will be made by the same company, Quanta Computer, which makes the MacBook Pro, instead of Asus, the company that makes the current non-Pro MacBook.

If you're salivating over the idea of … Read more

Dual-screen laptop sees double

Earlier this month we mentioned a prototype dual touch-screen laptop but didn't think we'd be seeing anything like it off the drawing boards anytime soon. Shows you how much we know.

Pennsylvania-based Estari started out as a software company but somehow ended up developing a patented dual-screen computer originally for the U.S. military and is now selling its wares to the public. The specs of its "2-VU" model aren't all that noteworthy--a 1.83GHx Intel Dual Core processor, 1GB of memory, a 60GB hard drive and no conventional keyboard or mouse, according to I4U … Read more

Two Dell laptops go for $12,000

Better luck next time, Sparky. Remember those two special-edition World of Warcraft Dell laptops we mentioned that were up for charity auction on eBay? In case you missed it (shame on you for not reading Crave more carefully), they were a pair of custom XPS M1710 gaming notebooks painted by artist Mike Lavallee and signed by Michael Dell himself.

The company announced the winners, Trip Hoover of Texas and Daniel Marinow of Germany, whose combined bids totaled nearly $12,000, according to Laptoping. So don't feel too bad. The proceeds went to the America's Second Harvest.

The lumberjack's laptop case

One of digital technologies benefits has always been saving trees--or so we thought. It seems somewhat ironic then that such products as wooden computers, TVs and cameras appear to be on the rise.

Either way, we should have known that techno-fashion accessories wouldn't be far behind. Enter MoMA's wooden laptop tote, which is purportedly made from "ecologically thinned cedar," whatever that is. Shiny Shiny says you must pay for the privilege of being on the cutting edge, of course, to the tune of $265. But you'll be the envy of everyone at the next Gilligan'… Read more

Help Nvidia help you

We've already reported this week on Nvidia's issues with its GeForce 8800 cards and their lack of fully cooked Windows Vista driver software. Yup, it's a bummer. The good news is, you can help. Last night, Nvidia introduced a Vista Quality Assurance Page, which lets you, the GeForce-owning, Windows-Vista-running public, report your bugs directly to Nvidia. The page asks for reports on issues with Vista and any GeForce card, so just because you don't have a newer Nvidia card doesn't mean you're off the hook. But let's keep this on topic, folks. If … Read more
