Apple harvests MacBooks, iOS 6

Apple's announcements at WWDC were skewed heavily toward its Mac line, while also providing a first glimpse of the latest version of its iOS mobile operating system.

Perhaps the biggest news of the show was a redesigned 15.4-inch MacBook Pro that takes some design cues from the MacBook Air line. It boasts a 2,880x1,800-pixel resolution Retina Display screen, an HDMI port (an Apple first), USB 3.0, discrete Nvidia graphics, and the requisite Intel Ivy Bridge CPU, and Thunderbolt connections. However, starting at a whopping $2,199, this one is strictly for those with deep pockets. … Read more

Top DisplayPort monitors under $400

DisplayPort has yet to supplant DVI as the premiere PC monitor connection standard. In fact, if the monitors I've reviewed over the past two years are any indication, HDMI is still far more ubiquitous than DisplayPort.

With a higher maximum bandwidth, a built-in cable retention feature, and multiple monitor (over one cable) support, I'm still scratching my head as to why DisplayPort isn't more popular than it is, at the consumer level at least.

It's a high-bandwidth input that (unlike HDMI) I've yet to have any technical problems with. Here's hoping more monitors take a cue from the following five.… Read more

LinkedIn's leaky network security

LinkedIn had a rough week on the security front.

Hours after LinkedIn members reported that their passwords were on a list of stolen passwords, the business-networking site confirmed that some 6.5 million of its members' passwords had been stolen and uploaded to a Russian hacker server. At this point, it's not clear how many of the passwords were cracked.

The damage appears to be somewhat limited in scope of data, the post says, but it's also still unclear how many of the site's more than 160 million users may have been affected. After realizing the problem, … Read more

Foursquare checks in with a slick new UI

The Foursquare app for both iPhone and Android got a complete redesign in the latest update out moments ago. The streamlined interface uses fewer buttons than older versions but adds changes in functionality based on millions of users' feedback, says Alex Rainert, head of product at Foursquare.

The new redesign simplifies the look with only three buttons across the bottom for Friends, Explore, and your profile. The new Friends tab lets you view a feed of latest activity from your friends with big photographs; lets you comment and "Like" any activity; and check out tips and lists that … Read more

Foursquare gets a face-lift for a better all-around experience (First Take)

By now, "checking in" at coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and sporting events is a common practice across many apps, but it was Foursquare that really made this social activity popular.

Before the announcement, I had a phone interview with Alex Rainert, head of product at Foursquare. Rainert says Foursquare has listened to user feedback and has torn apart the current app for both iOS and Android and rebuilt it anew to make browsing locations around you an easier and richer experience.

With the latest version of Foursquare, the interface has been completely reworked to a much cleaner design … Read more

Flame malware grills Mideast computers

week in review A massive and complex virus has been discovered to be lurking in the Middle East, stealing data from targeted systems.

The malware -- dubbed Flame -- is designed to steal information about targeted systems and stored files as well as computer display contents and audio conversations. The malware appears to be state-sponsored, but experts are not sure what country is behind it.

Iran was the central target for the virus, but it also impacted machines in the West Bank, Syria, and other Middle East countries, as well as Sudan. And although some media reports have linked Israel … Read more

Toshiba Excite 10 review: Monstrous expandable storage potential

Not two months after its release of the "thinnest and lightest" tablet, the Toshiba 10 LE, Toshiba is back with a new 10-inch tablet: the Toshiba Excite 10.

It's not thinner or lighter than the LE, but the Excite 10 does bring Android 4.0, a Tegra 3 CPU, and 128GB expandable storage option to the table.

That may be enough to outclass the LE, but what about tablets that offer more than just a thin profile? My full review of the Toshiba Excite 10 attempts to find answers.
