From the beautifully crafted and compact Moto X to the phenomenally long-lasting Droid Maxx with its ridiculously high-capacity battery, Motorola's new Android smartphones for 2013 have a lot to offer. And thanks to Motorola Mobility's recent acquisition by Google, its latest mobile phones flaunt some truly innovative Android features. … Read more
If you're a Verizon customer looking for an affordable yet compact Android smartphone, the $99.99 Motorola Droid Mini sure sounds tempting. And on the whole it delivers just what you'd expect from a $99.99 phone. It has the same fast processor as the Droid Ultra and the Droid Maxx, battery life is long, and call quality is excellent. Of course, you'll notice that Motorola did cut corners, but the company had to do something to knock the Mini's price down under $100.
In my book, though, those corners, specifically the cheap build quality and … Read more
If you watch a lot of movies and can deal with the hassles of setting up five or more speakers, plus a subwoofer, go ahead and buy an AV receiver. We've reviewed a bunch of the latest models here on CNET, just pick the one that best suits your needs.
Then again, if you listen to more music than watch movies, a stereo receiver might be a better option. Think about it: the more speakers you buy with a fixed amount of dollars, the less good they're likely to be; the same dollar amount lavished on just two … Read more
By now the drill is familiar. Apple rolls out the next iPhone. It has a few hardware upgrades that make it better, faster, and more feature rich. And then we wait and see what hardware features make it into the next iPads, which Apple should unveil in October if you believe all the rumors and leaks (yes, more unverified photos surfaced this week on Sonny Dickson's site).
Apple's upcoming iPad line might have been leaked onto the Web before the company would have liked.
Sonny Dickson, a site that has quickly made a name for itself by publishing leaked images of devices that have proven to be real, posted photos on Thursday of what the site claims is the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.
The images, which are not accompanied by any information on where they were obtained or how likely it is that they are real, show both tablets featuring much the same design, including an aluminum finish on the back and a prominent … Read more
Yesterday's iPhone event revealed nothing about new iPads, but if a new video is to be believed, there's an iPad Mini 2 waiting in Apple's wings -- and its feature set is definitely open to interpretation.
Unbox Therapy, which recently showed a very convincing-looking iPad 5 shell, claims to have the back plate that will house the iPad Mini 2. Like the white first-gen Mini, it sports an aluminum finish, but this time with a mirrored Apple logo -- same as the rumored iPad 5. Take a look:
The key takeaway, of course, is that the iPad … Read more
"This is about as close as America gets to having a royal baby."
With these words, Jimmy Kimmel introduced the latest incarnations of the iPhone, as well as his latest attempt to show how dunderheaded people are.
This time, his witty sidekicks wafted onto Hollywood Boulevard and handed people an iPad Mini.
In the same breath, it was explained that this was the new iPhone. … Read more
Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip will debut on the iPhone 5S, but it may find its best gaming platform on upcoming iPads.
The A7 is the world's first 64-bit chip for smartphones. What that means for consumers is better performance on data-intensive apps like games because, among other things, it means the chip can address more memory more effectively than a 32-bit processor.
First introduced to supercomputers in the 1970s, 64-bit computing landed at Apple in the Power Mac G5 in 2003 via the first 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor.
Fast forward to 2013. It seems increasingly likely that … Read more
Apple could release the iPad Mini Retina this year as it faces a crush of high-resolution competition, an analyst said Wednesday.
Despite production challenges, a Retina version of the iPad Mini could land this year, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. (Via MacRumors.)
The Retina version of the Mini -- particularly the display -- is proving difficult to manufacture in the very high volumes required by Apple, analysts have told CNET in the past -- leading some to conclude that a 2014 release is possible.
But Kuo believes that the new Mini "may be pulled in for [launch] … Read more
I wouldn't call most computers "cute," but I'll make an exception for the CuBox-i mini-computer from SolidRun. It fits all of its hardware, including an HDMI port, IR receiver, and USB ports, into a 2-inch square black box. It runs Android and Linux. It's like a pet rock that's actually useful.
There are a handful of permutations of the CuBox-i, but the the CuBox-i1 is a real attention-getter, based mostly on its super-low $45 price tag. It comes with a single-core GC880 GPU and 512MB of memory. Those specs aren't going to blow you out of the water, but at that price, they don't have to.… Read more
