Brian Cooley checks out the new Hyundai Genesis Sedan and Coupe, two very different vehicles under the same nameplate, at the 2009 Detroit auto show.
The cheap car price wars are heating up with Hyundai's announcement that it is dropping the price of its Accent GS three door to $9,970, knocking the $9,990 Nissan Versa 1.6 from its short-lived position as the least-expensive car in America. With a single $20 separating the two vehicles, let's take a look at the specs and see how cheapskate champions compare.
Starting under the hood, both vehicles are equipped with 1.6-liter four-bangers. Nissan's 107-horsepower engine is just edged out by the Hyundai's 110-horsepower mill. Both qualify as Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicles (ULEV) … Read more
LOS ANGELES--Hyundai will add a crossover and a turbocharged engine to its U.S. lineup.
The new vehicle will be based partly on the HED-5 i-Mode concept that debuted for North America at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The HED-5 is a three-row, six-passenger crossover that uses a variety of lightweight materials.
Hyundai executives did not say when the U.S. crossover would debut, but it is expected to be seven seats and could go on sale as early as the 2010 model year.
The concept is powered by a new 2.0-liter, 268 horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine--the Theta Turbo … Read more
Hyundai hasn't jumped into the hybrid pool yet, but it's about to with a new battery technology.
Hyundai has been reaching for the stars lately, comparing its cars to other automakers' luxury models and launching the Genesis luxury sedan. Now the company wants to be "the most fuel-efficient automaker on the planet," according to Hyundai Vice President for Product Development John Krafcik. To achieve its lofty goals, Hyundai showed off its Blue Drive hybrid power train at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. This power train works similarly to full hybrids from Toyota and Ford, powering the car under electric or a combination of gas and electric, but Hyundai takes a leap forward by using … Read more
The days of keeping a library of tapes or CDs in your car are over. You walk around with an MP3 player, so why shouldn't you be able to use it in your car? Today's MP3 players can hold your entire music collection, so you don't have to decide which tunes to bring with you. Today's cars let you easily plug in an iPod or MP3 player and have full control over the device through voice command or the car's touch screen, and that's much safer than trying to manipulate the small controls on … Read more
Hyundai's Genesis is the new kid on the block and Hyundai's new jack of all trades, with a sedan taking aim at luxury buyers and a coupe that's pulling the double duty of targeting the tuner market with a 2-liter turbo model and the upmarket enthusiast with it's V-6 model. With a marquee aimed at such a wide gamut of buyers, it's no wonder that when the Korean automaker put a few Genesis models into the hands of master tuners--DUB, RK Sport, and Rhys Millen Racing, among others--the results varied so wildly.

The Mac Mini is particularly valued by automobile customizers, because its small size makes it easy to hide/integrate into a cramped vehicle interior. Hyundai Motor America and Rides Magazine have taken this idea to the next level by tossing darn-near the entire Apple Computer product line into the cabin of the new Hyundai Genesis, for display at the 2008 SEMA Show.
The Rides Genesis is truly an Apple fanboy's dream car, featuring two Mac Mini computers, a MacBook Air, iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, high-speed Wi-Fi Internet connection, and movie theater-quality surround sound all integrated into the interior.

At the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Hyundai displayed a hybrid version of its Santa Fe small SUV. This hybrid powertrain uses a 2.4-liter gas engine complemented by a 40 horsepower electric motor that generates 151 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission delivers this combined power to the wheels. But the real innovation in Hyundai's hybrid system is the use of a 270 volt lithium polymer battery pack. Hyundai says that lithium polymer has greater energy density than lithium ion, can take more recharging cycles, and is cheaper to manufacture. In the Santa Fe Hybrid, this system returns … Read more
Rising world-wide gas prices triggered automakers to release a new generation of small city cars at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. These cars range from the diminutive Toyota iQ to the more conventionally-sized Hyundai i20. Engine sizes go from 1 up to 1.5 liters, with fuel economies between 40 and 50 miles per gallon. Not much cabin tech is available in these cars, although, judging from its steering wheel buttons, the new generation Ford Ka might be getting the Sync system.
