Step right up for Dr. X's amazing cure from outer space!

LAS VEGAS--No one has ever met Dr. X.

And even though he claims to have created breakthrough medical technology and powerful cures with the help of alien beings, Dr. X won't show at CES.

But his QuantumMan app is here. It supposedly diagnoses and heals your ailments with the simple touch of a smartphone, a few ounces of faith, and some good old cash.

At a small booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center's mile-long South Hall, somewhere between Wacom Technology and VistaQuest, Extraterrestrial Technology is pushing QuantumMan medical treatments at CES 2013. … Read more

Vizio unveils 10-inch Tegra 4-based tablet

LAS VEGAS--Vizio showed off an impressive 10-inch tablet that features the recently revealed Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor at CES 2013. The Android 4.2 tablet also impresses with its super high-definition 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution.

The 10-inch Vizio tablet still lacks a proper name but is one of the first to house the ultra-fast Nvidia Tegra 4 CPU. Its fast processor and high resolution could compete with the Google Nexus 10, which sports an identical resolution to the Vizio tablet.

The engineering sample shown at CES 2013 was described as attractive, but Vizio has yet to announce pricing or … Read more

Liquipel 2.0 phone waterproofer splashes down

LAS VEGAS--Waterproofing solutions for smartphones were traditionally expensive and bulky -- until Liquipel came along. When the company showcased its nanocoating process at last year's CES, it caught the attention of many people with its unique invisible shield and relatively low cost.

This year, the company is back again at CES with Liquipel 2.0, which is said to be 100 times more effective than the version from last year. According to the brochure, the new process offers better durability and corrosion resistance, in addition to improved water protection. … Read more

Panasonic pushes prototype pixels: 4K Windows 8 tablet

LAS VEGAS--Panasonic is ready to go to the next level in PC and tablet resolution. Is anyone else?

Ultra HD/4K televisions blanket this year's Consumer Electronics Show like freshly fallen snow, but Panasonic is standing alone demonstrating 4K technology in a personal computer. The company's 4K tablet prototype on display at its booth has a ridiculous 3,840x2,560-pixel resolution and 230 pixels per inch packed into a 20-inch IPS LED-backlit LCD display.

The 15-inch Retina Display MacBook Pro has a 2,880x1,880-pixel resolution at 220 ppi. There isn't a 20-inch display currently in a … Read more

At CES, Sharp explains benefits of its IGZO display tech

LAS VEGAS -- At CES today, a Sharp engineer talked to CNET about the merits of LCDs that use IGZO technology.

IGZO displays first came to consumers' attention when it was rumored that Apple was going to tap Sharp's IGZO tech for the third-generation iPad.

While that didn't happen (at that time, Sharp apparently had not gotten IGZO to the point where it could be mass produced for a commercial 10-inch class tablet like Apple's), Sharp is now offering IGZO on commercial smartphones and tablets in Japan.

And the company is showing off 32-inch 4K-resolution low-power IGZO … Read more

Mauz goes all 'Minority Report' as a mouse replacement

LAS VEGAS--We tech writers are constantly comparing real products to what we've seen in sci-fi movies. I'm still waiting for my Hoverboard, but at least we're inching a little closer to some "Minority Report"-style computer interfaces with the Mauz, a device that turns your iPhone into a mouse with special skills.

Mauz is like a combination of the Wii remote, the Kinect, and a desktop mouse. It involves a small device that plugs into your iPhone and an app that makes the magic happen.… Read more

T-Mobile already has 1.9 million iPhones on its network

LAS VEGAS--For a carrier that doesn't actually sell the iPhone, T-Mobile certainly has a decent amount of them on its network.

There are 1.9 million iPhones on T-Mobile, and the carrier has a monthly run rate of 100,000 new iPhones coming in, Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray told CNET.

The amount of iPhones coming in has accelerated since T-Mobile began actively looking to poach customers dissatisfied with AT&T's service, or looking for a more competitively priced plan. The carrier launched a campaign in September to get customers to make the switch, and even featured … Read more

Archive it old-school with wired, LED-lit filing cabinet

LAS VEGAS--The paperless office is a utopian dream. We're still surrounded by mountains of paper, especially organizationally challenged people like yours truly.

Enter the iMD Smart Filing System, a rather charming blend of analog and digital tech. Shown off at CES 2013 by the unheralded iMicroData, it lets you find an individual paper folder and its contents in old-school filing cabinets.

If you've lost your birth certificate, for instance, you just look it up on the app that comes with the system, and it'll tell you what drawer to look in.

It's almost as simple as completely analog filing cabinets, but you don't have to use your brain all that much. … Read more

MakerBot goes higher-end with two-color Replicator 2X 3D printer

LAS VEGAS--We knew the Replicator 2X was coming, and MakerBot did not disappoint.

Announced only in name this past September, MakerBot demonstrated a working Replicator 2X 3D printer at a press conference today at CES. The new printer is a higher-end version of the Replicator 2 MakerBot announced this past autumn.

Like the Replicator 2, the new model features a finer printing resolution than the original MakerBot Replicator, as small as 100 microns per layer of extruded plastic, and it also has a redesigned chassis. Among the updated features of the more polished-looking design are an aluminum build platform and … Read more
