First day at CES 2012 a mixed bag

The first day at the Consumer Electronics Show was quiet but still yielded a few nuggets.

Acer today kicked off what will be a parade of press conferences by announcing a host of ultrabooks, including a new "world's thinnest ultrabook," but ultimately proved thin on what it had booked. The company's big disappointment was that it had its head in the cloud--finally. It announced its AcerCloud effort, and in doing so it looked like a late-to-the-party copycat.

OnStar followed up by announcing it was giving the green light to third-party developers and opening up its previously … Read more

Lenovo reveals Ice Cream Sandwich TV

Lenovo is trying to make its entry into the television market doubly sweet by adding Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to the mix.

Better known for its ThinkPad series of laptops, the company today took the wraps off what is thought to be the first television running Google's Android 4.0. Dubbed the Lenovo K91Smart TV, the device will initially be available only in China, with release in other countries to follow.

The 55-inch 3D LED K91 will be will be powered by Qualcomm's 8060 Snapdragon dual-core CPU and feature 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a … Read more

Lenovo slim tower uncovers another new Nvidia GPU

LAS VEGAS--Along with the new IdeaCentre all-in-ones and its new gaming desktop, Lenovo also has a new standard slim-tower PC on deck for later this year.

The H520 is a pure commodity PC, albeit in an attractive case. I've asked Lenovo for some better pictures, which I'll post as soon as I have them.

From the spec sheet, at least, this system actually offers one surprise. Again pre-empting Nvidia's own announcements, for this system Lenovo provides details of a heretofore unannounced 2GB GeForce GTX 630 graphics card option.

Otherwise the configuration options look standard. Intel Core CPU options go up to the i7 family, although exactly what generation of the Core i7 Lenovo has in mind is unclear. Given the June release schedule, I'd bet Ivy Bridge. The starting price for the base model will be $499 when the H520 makes its debut.… Read more

Gaming PCs not dead yet, says Lenovo

LAS VEGAS--"Although the discussion currently is centered on mobility, thin and light notebooks, and all-in-ones, the traditional desktop still hasn't entirely lost its relevance."

That quote comes from Lenovo's media brief for its new IdeaCentre K430 gaming desktop. While hard-core PC gamers likely never looked up long enough from Skyrim to question the health of their hobby, this system and HP's Phoenix desktop come as a surprise amid the anticipated parade of ultrabooks.… Read more

New Lenovo all-in-ones out unannounced Nvidia chip

LAS VEGAS--Lenovo's pair of attractive, updated IdeaCentre B-Series all-in-ones add some welcome features. The bigger news is the as-yet unannounced Nvidia graphics chip listed among their specs.

Lenovo lists two systems in this B-Series update, the 23-inch B540 and the 21.5-inch B340. Both feature more streamlined designs than Lenovo's preceding B520 and B320, having lost the overly stylized trim for a clean-looking frameless display.… Read more

Lenovo IdeaPad Z, G, and Y series updates focus on better graphics, not much else

LAS VEGAS--Sometimes you just can't come up with a good angle on how to spin a laptop update.

In the case of the Lenovo IdeaPad Z, G, and Y series updates announced at CES, consider these more of the same, with better graphics.

That's not bad at all, but we expect little updates like these every year: these IdeaPads certainly aren't out to surprise. Because Intel's next-generation Ivy Bridge mobile processors won't be available for laptops right away, these IdeaPad updates are indicative of what we're seeing on laptops that aren't ultrabooks: small tweaks, nothing fancy.… Read more

Lenovo ultrabooks add colors, larger hard drives, and a 14-inch version

LAS VEGAS--Ultrabooks are everywhere here at CES 2012. More importantly, a new class of ultrabook has emerged: the 14-incher.

Last year's Lenovo IdeaPad U300s was one of our favorites in an early first wave of ultrabooks. The new IdeaPad U310 and U410 alter the equation somewhat with the addition of standard hard drives instead of solid-state drives (SSDs), but that extra storage option could be exactly what attracts some buyers who might otherwise be turned off by the limitations of lower-capacity flash storage.… Read more

Don't call it a Netbook! Atom-powered 11-inch Lenovo IdeaPad S200 is 'mini notebook'

LAS VEGAS--The netbook's not quite dead yet. The Lenovo IdeaPad S200 features a next-gen Intel Atom processor, and it should offer a significantly better experience than previous-generation 10-inch Atom netbooks.

The rise of low-cost 11-inch ultraportable laptops began last year with a wave of affordable computers powered by AMD E-350 APUs. The colorful IdeaPad S200 series does include an AMD-powered version (the S206), but it's the Atom version that bears the most interest for us.… Read more

Intel's Ivy Bridge chip lurks inside future ultrabooks at CES

Ultrabooks will come in two basic varieties at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas: present and future. The latter will incorporate Intel's Ivy Bridge processor, destined to populate all of the ultrabooks and hybrids coming out in the second half of the year.

Ivy Bridge follows the Sandy Bridge chip shipping in current and ultrabooks. While SB should be the chip of choice in ultrabooks until this summer, expect PC makers (and Apple) to make the switcheroo to Ivy Bridge after that.

PC manufacturing titans like Foxconn and Inventec were already hawking their Ivy Bridge wares in September. … Read more

Apple's iMac grabs lion's share of all-in-one PC market

Apple's iMac captured the biggest slice of all-in-one computer sales in the third quarter, according to data out this week from NPD DisplaySearch.

For the quarter, the iMac scooped up 32.9 percent of all sales of all-in-one (AIO) PCs, loosely defined as computers with their inside components squeezed into the monitor chassis.

Taking second place behind Apple in the third quarter was Lenovo, with 22.7 percent of all AIO sales, followed by HP with a 21.4 percent share.

Other PC players, including NEC, Sony, and Fujitsu, managed to eke out only 2 or 3 percent of … Read more
