SIM cards of steel, Razrs not so much

Everyone seems to have an awesome story or two about cell phones getting destroyed at parties. I've heard tales about them getting thrown into pools, flushed down toilets, dropped into cakes, and pretty much everything else. They make great "embarrassing tales of the digital age" stories. And it's even better when they happened to your friends, not you. Like this one, about my friend Cliff and his dear departed Razr.

It was my roommate's birthday this weekend, and our former college buddy Cliff (think Bluto Blutarsky, except 6 feet 7 inches tall) had driven up … Read more

Motorola goes for the gold (and diamonds)

Peter Aloisson had a hard act to follow: himself. After all, it's not every day that a designer is so inspired to come up with something like the "Diamond Crypto Smartphone," which went for a cool $1.3 million.

So rather than try to exceed his already-over-the-top standard, he apparently has decided to go for a broader market with the Motorola V3i "Stainless Steel Gold" handset. The phone still has plenty of diamonds--855, to be exact, weight 3.8 total carats--but it's far more reasonable in price: Just $10,000. And if you're … Read more

T-Mobile gets all colorful

T-Mobile is never one to shy away from new colors for its cell phones. Already it has introduced Moto's Razr in a variety of colors and designs, including magenta and dragon tattoo. But now the carrier turns its attention to one of its most recent offerings, the Motorola Rizr Z3. In addition to its existing blue model, T-Mobile soon will offer the Rizr Rose. To the rest of you, that means red, but we admit that "rose" is a little catchier.

The feature set on the new Rizr is unchanged, and though we couldn't get pricing … Read more

Razr V3xx goes platinum

Brace yourself, dear Crave readers, as Motorola has given us a Razr in yet another hue.

This time, however, we're paying a bit more attention because the phone in question is the Motorola Razr V3xx from Cingular/ATST. Already available in charcoal and gold, the V3xx now comes in a platinum color as well. Features are the same; you still get such offerings as HSDPA support, Bluetooth, a music player, and the disappointing 1.3-megapixel camera. With a service contract, you can get it for an affordable $99.

Bluetooth helmet lets you crash in style

We're relieved that Motorola has apparently decided to consult some people in the fashion industry before introducing their newest line of headgear. That, anyway, is the only explanation we can assume for the contrast between its utterly nerdsome MP3 knit cap of last winter and the Bluetooth bike helmet it's co-branded with Red.

The helmet has been touted for bike riding, but Gearfuse points out that it can be used just as well for skateboarding, snowboarding or other life-threatening activities we're far too old to contemplate. Using Motorola's Audex system, it can also work with special … Read more

The smell-o-phone comes to the U.S.

Is there a big outcry for scented gadgets? The folks at Crave have commented on the uselessness of scented USB drives and the wackiness of aroma phones in Japan, but we may be in store for some more smelly goodness.

Motorola has received a patent for a handset that releases scents by heating a gel packet, similar to the way plug-in air fresheners work. According to the New Scientist blog, the phone's power amplifier could activate this feature without dramatically altering the phone's design. This is key for Motorola because slim, chic phones, like the Rizr, are the … Read more

Amp'd on the Motorola Q; not just for suits anymore

Make no mistake, this ain't your dad's Motorola Q. Today, Amp'd Mobile introduced its own, semirevamped version of the sleek Moto Q for all its young, future corporate-climbing subscribers. The Moto Q, Amp'd Edition keeps many of the features found on the Sprint and Verizon models, but it also has an enhanced Flash interface to give it a more hip, less business-y feel, and you get access to Amp'd's entertainment content. The smart phone also sports the newer black casing, supports Bluetooth stereo headsets, and comes with a 256MB mini SD card in the … Read more

Moto teases us with the Ming

The Motorola Ming (also known as the 1200) is nothing new, but without a supporting U.S. carrier the sexy phone has been a bit scarce in this country since its introduction last year. But this week we noticed that Moto is showing the Ming on its U.S. Web site with an invitation to learn more. Could this be a sign that the phone will move past pricey unlocked status to full carrier respectability? Besides asking us to register for more information, the page doesn't tell us much concerning availability. But we really hope we'll see more … Read more

T-Mobile launches Moto Krzr, Verizon picks up the Slvr

Don't think that T-Mobile or Verizon Wireless are taking a rest after the end of the CTIA show last week. A quick look at their Web sites today shows that both carriers have added new phones to their lineups. Though it's not a surprise T-Mobile stepped in to formerly offer the Motorola Krzr K1. The GSM version of the Krzr landed at Cingular/AT&T last month, while Sprint and Verizon introduced the CDMA Krzr K1m last year. T-Mobile's K1 is silver (Cingular opted for blue) but the feature set is standard including Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel … Read more

CTIA roundup: Day three

The last day of CTIA is always quiet as show attendees hurry to the airport and the convention center begins the changeover to whatever show comes next. Yet, that didn't stop our editors from nosing around for the last bits of news.

We checked out Kyocera's Bluetooth Music Gateway, CallWave's new Vtxt application and we caught news of the Nokia 5700 Xpress Music, the update to the admirable Nokia 5300. Bonnie Cha posted a slide show for the new Motorola phones, and I gathered several shots of the action on the show floor.

As we said earlier, … Read more
