Admit it: When you buy a smartphone, laptop, or any of a zillion types of consumer electronics devices, you're usually not thinking about what effect you're going to have on the environment. Maybe it's time you should.
Certainly, there are a growing number of eco-friendly options out there, whether in the gadgets themselves or in the accessories and services that go along with them. Some of that was on display last week at the Greener Gadgets conference in New York.
Solar energy was a recurrent theme amid the gadgetry. Nokia, for instance, showed off a concept for … Read more

Apple doubled the capacity of the iPhone and the iPod Touch on Tuesday for an additional $100.
The iPhone once again comes in two capacities: 8GB for $399 and now 16GB for $499. Apple sold 8GB and 4GB varieties on iPhone Day, but it discontinued the 4GB model after it cut the price of the 8GB model to $399. Something like 90 percent of all early iPhone buyers opted for the 8GB version.
Apple thinks that there's still room … Read more
This is a switch. Usually the products from Japan's Strapya fall squarely under the category of novelty items, ranging from the silly to the, er, exotic. But it's finally come up with something practical: a mobile phone strap with a solar charger.
The solar cell can be charged up to 500 times, according to Tokyomango, and can use an AC adapter as a backup battery. It doesn't hold a candle to the drunken salaryman dangle, of course, but nothing really can.
Get to work, iPhone. As far as HyperOffice president Farzin Arsanjani is concerned, you've spent too much time avoiding real work.
If he has his way, your days loafing around in back pockets while the other mobile devices pull their weight are over. That's why HyperOffice (review) recently announced a plan to make its suite of online collaboration tools even better on the iPhone (trial beta).
While the productivity application for rapid-growth companies has already been accessible from mobile browsers, certain functions are limited within a constrained user interface. The iPhone, with its large screen and Safari browser, … Read more
Eastman Kodak hopes turning one aspect of chip design on its head will help improve cell phone cameras--or at least help their image quality catch up with their megapixel increases.
"We believe we've created a new camera sensor product that rivals that of real cameras, but it's small enough to be used in a camera phone," said Fas Mosleh, manager of CMOS market work for Kodak's professional and applied imaging group.
There have been nice cameras in high-end mobile phones such as Nokia's N95, but Kodak believes its technology, built into a 5-megapixel sensor … Read more

Well, that was a disappointment. Last year we were intrigued by concept photos of a next-generation watch phone from SMS Technology that looked like an iPhone strapped to a wrist. But now the "Cellwatch M500" is scheduled to launch in March, and it looks pretty much like so many other other watch phones that seem to come out every other month.
The Australian-made M500, however, may be one of the few models that doesn't come from a generic Chinese company, which will undoubtedly give it more credibility among potential consumers. At the same time, its price--about $900--is … Read more
Any old schlub with 20 large can get an iPhone case studded with diamonds, but how many can say they have one that's made of shimmering silver python? (We didn't say anyone would want one, mind you, just how many could say it.)
French designer Chloe apparently uses a special treatment that gives the snakeskin a "unique metallic look," according to Sybarites, at the bargain price of around $370. The fashion house has even set up a Web site specifically for the iPhone, reportedly accessible by typing in www.chloe.com in its address bar.

Here's one that promises to unleash you from your crappy phone that goes on strike once you are out of your country. Designed by Vadim Kibardin, the conceptual "Freedom Phone" is a small pre-paid handset that theoretically allows you to chat for 60, 100, or 200 minutes. There's no room for a SIM card so you'd be spared roaming charges.
According to Yanko Design, the Freedom Phone would charge in just 10 minutes. Not bad for a concept, but it should just stay as that. It's probably a better idea to buy a local … Read more
