Nokia 5700 first thoughts

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music. In fact, I loved it so much when I reviewed it last year that I gave it a CNET Editors' Choice award. So you can imagine I was a bit excited when the new Nokia 5700 Xpress Music landed on my desk. As the update to the 5300, the 5700 offers everything found on its predecessor but with a new twist (literally).

At first you might think the overall design hasn't changed much, but the 5700 offers a twisting base like that on … Read more

Nokia's 'Signature' phone is work of art

It's not often that a mobile phone gets a unique makeover these days, especially at a time when ordinary handsets with loud paint jobs are routinely passed off as exclusive designer creations. But the new "Signature Edition" of Nokia's N76 is truly a work of art, thanks to Finnish sculptor Bjorn Weckstrom.

This customized black-and-chrome version of the smart phone features a miniature handmade sculpture from Lapponia Jewelry designed by Weckstrom. Electronista says that even the on-screen interface of the handset is "directly inspired by the artist's efforts."

The phone, whose specs are … Read more

Screening calls: Nokia's CK-15W

Taking a leaf out of Harman Kardon's gadget book, Nokia is about to launch a in-car minidisplay to allow drivers to control their cell phone calls when on the road. The Nokia Bluetooth Display Car Kit CK-15W features a 2.2-inch TFT color display, which can be mounted on a car's dashboard to give drivers the information they need for making and controlling calls via some handsome-looking menus.

Like some of the Bluetooth stereos we have reviewed recently, the CK-15W will have the ability to download cell phone contact books. We'll be doing our best to get … Read more

Nokia's Luna: A stylish slider made of glass

Nokia today announced the Nokia 8600 Luna, a new luxury slider handset that combines a soft-touch stainless steel body with a layer of smoked glass. When closed, you can see the illuminated keypad glow and pulsate underneath the glass. Named after the goddess of moonlight, the Luna's features aren't too shabby either--quad-band GSM support, a 2-megapixel camera, a music player, Bluetooth, and a stunning display.

Nokia expects the Luna to be available during the second quarter of the year (which should be pretty soon), and estimated retail price is 700 euros. No U.S. carrier has been announced … Read more

Nokia's anti-lightning phone

This is one of those products that really makes us wonder if some companies have too many employees--a situation that inevitably leads to solutions in search of a problem. Nokia may be suffering this workforce malady if its latest brainchild is any indication: a mobile phone that warns of approaching lightning. Yes, you read that right.

We thought we'd dispensed with this misguided idea in an item a month ago that cited (and mocked appropriately) a "personal lightning detector." But nay, apparently one of the largest phone makers in the world thinks this is a valuable feature, … Read more

Teaser alert: Nokia N81 and N82 pictures surface

Just when you got your hands on the Nokia N95 and the Nokia N75, it seems there's something cooler on the horizon (as usual). Images and specs have surfaced on two new Nokia N series phones: the Nokia N81 and the Nokia N82. The N81 looks to be a sleek quadband (EDGE; 2100MHz HSDPA-lovin') slider phone with 8GM internal memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. It's said to be replacing the music-centric Nokia N91 and comes equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the other hand, the Nokia N82 seems to be going the camera route with … Read more

Nokia charges users to be green

Unplugging your phone after it's done charging could save a bundle of electricity, which is why Nokia is launching a new feature encouraging users to do just that.

The Finnish cell-phone maker announced Thursday that three of its mass-market phones--the Nokia 1200, 1208 and 1650--will alert users when the handset is done charging and suggest it be unplugged. The feature will eventually be rolled out to all of Nokia's products.

The move to be more energy-conscious is part of a larger agreement mobile phone manufacturers made in September 2006.

Photos: The big, bad Nokia N75

Now, by big and bad, we don't necessarily mean that in the "This phone is so rockin', it'll knock your socks off" kind of way. The Nokia N75 is big in the bulky sense and it's bad in that there are some major disappointments to this much-anticipated phone. Is it all bad? I mean, there's got to be a reason why there's been so much clamor for this phone since it was first introduced in September 2006, right? Well, we finally got our hands on one, so take a look through our photo … Read more
