The FCC approved a new Sanyo candy-bar handset called the Sanyo S1 today. Like most Sanyo phones, the S1 is reportedly heading for Sprint later this year. It looks like a pretty basic phone--there's Bluetooth, but no camera--and that's about it. We haven't seen too many Sanyo candy bars lately, so this will be interesting to watch. The holding company that brought BlackBerry Nation to its knees in 2006 is once again on the advance, this time filing suit against AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. The suit was filed last week (PDF) in Richmond, Va., home to the last round of legal tussling between NTP and Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.

Federal regulators late on Thursday slapped three wireless firms, including No. 3 operator Sprint Nextel, with a total of $2.83 million in fines for not meeting a long-passed deadline for equipping subscribers with enhanced 911 service.

The Federal Communications Commission had set a December 31, 2005 date by which all mobile carriers had to ensure that 95 percent of their subscribers had location-sensitive handsets--that is, those that allow emergency responders to pinpoint a caller's location upon connection to the 911 switchboard.

Vlingo is a new mobile voice service launching today. It centers around a small Java app that lets you talk into your handset to create a text message instead of using your phone's keypad. The service is its own SMS client, piggybacking off your phone to send the message, although it forgoes using your phone's native SMS app, or word dictionary. The second quarter ended as a bit of a mixed bag for struggling wireless operator Sprint Nextel, as it reported a huge drop in profits but also grew its subscriber base.

Sprint's profits dropped 95 percent to $19 million, down from $370 million in the same quarter a year earlier, largely due to high costs associated with building out the company's 4G WiMax network. But at the same time, Sprint added 373,000 new customers and reduced its churn rate, a major feat for a company that has been bleeding customers for past several quarters.
