Moto unveils V Cast TV phone

Though there was much ado about Verizon Wireless' V Cast Mobile TV service when the carrier launched the service earlier this year, it's been eerily quiet since then. In particular, we've been waiting for new handsets beyond the original LG VX9400 and the Samsung SCH-U620.

Fortunately, our wait came to an end this morning when Verizon and Motorola announced the new Moto Rizr Z6tv. Sporting the familiar, and may we add quite attractive, Rizr slider design, the Z6tv offers a solid feature set beyond the Mobile TV support (which is quite enough by itself). You'll find Bluetooth, … Read more

Next big cell phone app: International money transfers

Think of it as an SMS message with a lot of zeros.

Anam, an Irish company, allows residents in Europe to transfer large amounts from a bank account in one country, let's say the U.K., to Romania, according to John O'Donohue, managing director of Motorola Ventures International, which invested in Anam. Currently, immigrants from eastern Europe to western members of the EU use Western Union to transfer money. With Anam's cell phone service, you can save a lot on commissions.

Immigration is one of the big issues changing the cell phone market on the continent, O'… Read more

T-Mobile debuts Sidekick Slide and Sidekick LX

OK, kids--hope you've been nice this year, because here's something you might want to add to your holiday wish lists. Today, T-Mobile announced not one, but two new Sidekicks to be added to its lineup: the T-Mobile Sidekick LX and the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide.

Let's start with the latter since it brings something new to the mobile messaging device: a slide-up screen (all together now: oooohhh, ahhhh). Unlike previous models, which have been manufactured by Sharp/Danger, the Sidekick Slide is made by Motorola and features a smaller design. It measures 4.6 inches wide by 2.… Read more

Alltel's Razr2 reviewed

After the iPhone debut, the launch of the Motorola Razr2 has been the biggest cell phone news of the summer. We've reviewed AT&T's Razr2 V9 and both the Verizon Wireless and Sprint versions of the Razr2 V9m, so now we turn our attention to the V9m with Alltel. Like its siblings, Alltel's handset offers a slick, stylish design and a host of high-end multimedia features. Of course, this being a Razr2, Alltel customized the handset's external display and added its own features, like its Celltop application and support for TeleNav GPS. It's not … Read more

Motorola goes home again

Apparently not everyone is on the verge of ditching their land lanes. That, at least, is what we surmise from the actions of various phone makers, which seem to think there's still business to be had in the home handset market.

Among the models introduced recently are those from Philips and Siemens, while Japan's Amadana even has one that's into leather. The latest, however, comes from a manufacturer that's ensconced in the mobile world, Motorola.

Its "MOTOLIVN" land-line brand will be introduced in Europe first, according to U.K.-based Pocket-lint, and one of … Read more

Motorola Z8 just not worth the hype

After the incredible Motorola Z6 and the very good Motorola Z3, I must admit I wanted the Motorola Rizr Z8 more than any upcoming phone. But, wow--be careful what you wish for.

True, I may have set the bar too high. But this phone doesn't do it at all. The best feature is its ability to curve, making holding the phone and talking more comfortable. It is arguably the easiest to answer and most comfortable to use on a call.

But as for everything else, forget it. The camera is just OK. Navigation is confusing. Music fairly good. Video … Read more

Alltel's Razr2 now on sale; could T-Mobile be next?

As expected, Alltel today formerly picked up the Motorola Razr2 V9m, that lovely Razr revamp that caught our attention last month. Alltel joins Verizon Wireless and Sprint in offering the feature-packed handset while AT&T has already countered with the GSM Razr2 V9. As is the case with the other carriers offering the Razr2, Alltel adds its own customization to the phone. The massive external display shows the missed calls list (handy indeed) and you'll find the carrier's unique Celltop application. The carrier chose to use Moto's standard user interface rather than applying its own, and … Read more

Motorola's designer walkie-talkies

Why should mobile phones be the only handheld communication devices to get all the attention from designers? Philips proved recently, for instance, that land lines too were capable of making a fashion statement. And now Motorola may be applying the concept to the most aesthetically challenged handset of all: the walkie-talkie.

The new "TLKR" line is a "stylish, easy-to-use and colorful" range of two-way radios, according to Pocket-lint. These definitely aren't the kind of cheapo toys some of us got at the five-and-dime store as kids. (Here's a definition the young 'uns.) Depending on … Read more

Just as the Razr was getting dull . . .

The Motorola Razr was a huge hit--in its day. Just in time, Motorola has redesigned and improved its flagship phone with the Razr 2. And the result is very positive.

Call quality and screen sharpness (both open and closed) are excellent. The large viewing area actually lets you enjoy video on your phone (Sprint PowerVision has a wide array of TV channels.) Camera is good, not great, but music (at a decent 99 cents per song) is crystal clear and very quickly downloaded.

The phone is thin, sleek, and will get you noticed. It opens easily. (Minor point: I've … Read more
