CTIA attendees ponder the iPhone

Influence is tough to measure, but it's one of those things where you know it when you see it.

Apple's influence on the mobile phone industry after just over 90 days as a player was evident at the CTIA show Tuesday. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer didn't mention the iPhone specifically in his keynote address, but noted that Apple "has done some nice work." After Ballmer's keynote, a friend of some staffers in Microsoft's booth enthusiastically demonstrated his iPhone for an audience checking out the latest Windows Mobile phones. And a panel of five … Read more

Walkie-talkie phone has split personality

Maybe Motorola is onto something with this walkie-talkie stuff. After all, it's one of the few functions the iPhone doesn't have (yet). And unlike the T.J. Hooker-style units of years past, some of the new models are barely distinguishable from fashion-conscious mobile phones.

In fact, according to SlashGear, Motorola's new i425 handset serves as both phone and walkie-talkie, with GPS features thrown in for good measure, all in a black or white case that's a half-inch thick and weighs 3.88 ounces. It's available from Sprint's Boost Mobile service on a pay-as-you-go … Read more

A Rokr or a Rizr?

Alltel landed itself a slick new cell phone today: the Motorola Rokr Z6m. A music-focused feature set gives the Z6m the Rokr name, but it is really just another Moto Rizr. It has the same (but still attractive) slider phone shape. Verizon Wireless released the nearly identical Moto Z6tv last month, but as its name suggests, that model is centered more on television.

Features on the Rokr Z6m include an MP3 player, a 2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, an expandable memory slot, support for TeleNav's GPS application, and a standard 3.5mm headset jack. The phone is now on sale … Read more

T-Mobile announces Razr2 V8

We expected that it would happen, and today we got confirmation that the Motorola Razr2 has at long last arrived at T-Mobile. The carrier announced it would sell the Razr2 V8 for $249 with service, making it the last major carrier to offer Moto's Razr revamp. From the outside the V8 has the same sleek design as both the GSM V9 and CDMA V9m, but inside there are some important differences. The V8 lacks 3G support (T-Mobile has yet to launch a wireless broadband network) and it doesn't fully utilize the external display. For a full analysis, check … Read more

Photos: Motorola's bumper crop

It's a big day in the cell phone world. Not only did LG's Rumor become official, but also Motorola stepped up with nine new handsets. Though the majority are basic models meant primarily for making calls, Moto also gave us a new "Luxury" version of the Razr2 V8 and a curvaceous model based on the former Pebl U6. Check them all out in our slide show.

Michel Gondry's Razr2 ad: Too creative for TV?

Pretty much everyone is aware that Motorola's Razr phones are skinny. Much fewer people know about director Michel Gondry's own skinniness.

But anyone who's seen director Gondry's films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep), music videos, or straight-to-YouTube clips is aware that his work is exceptionally creative, visual, and artistic.

Gondry was hired to create a TV commercial for Motorola's highly rated Razr2 phone, but apparently, the result was far too interesting to air on TV. See for yourself.

According to AdWeek, Motorola CEO Ed Zander felt the spot didn't … Read more

T-Mobile offers the Moto W490

A week after it launched the Samsung SGH-T539 Beat, T-Mobile quietly unveiled the Motorola W490 without so much a peep of a press release. The midrange camera phone is now appearing on the carrier's Web site for $49 with service. Features include Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, text and multimedia messaging, instant messaging, a speakerphone, a music player, personal organizer applications, and quad-band (GSM850/900/1800/1900) world phone support. Clad in basic black, the W490's design is based loosely on the design on the Moto Krzr K1; it has a 0.7-inch profile and a narrow front … Read more

The mobile future is wide open

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--If you're not exactly sure what you want in a mobile computer, don't worry: the folks who are building them aren't entirely sure themselves.

The consensus among five panelists gathered here at the ARM Developers Conference was that this is a very interesting and confusing time to be thinking about the future of mobile computing, because the playing field is so wide open and because consumers haven't decided exactly what they want.

"It's sort of like Darwin," said Tony Milbourn, director of mobile devices at Motorola. "We don't … Read more

One big idea is not enough: innovating innovation management

Management's focus on innovation comes and goes in cycles. Right now, it is all the rage again (although it remains to be seen if that's still the case as innovation budgets may be cut when the looming recession hits the US), and the business press is covering it all across the board. Managing innovation is one of the most critical tasks companies face, and yet it remains one of the biggest challenges. Not only do companies need to come up with new ideas, but they also need to nurture a culture that consistently encourages and rewards innovation. If … Read more

Moto unveils V Cast TV phone

Though there was much ado about Verizon Wireless' V Cast Mobile TV service when the carrier launched the service earlier this year, it's been eerily quiet since then. In particular, we've been waiting for new handsets beyond the original LG VX9400 and the Samsung SCH-U620.

Fortunately, our wait came to an end this morning when Verizon and Motorola announced the new Moto Rizr Z6tv. Sporting the familiar, and may we add quite attractive, Rizr slider design, the Z6tv offers a solid feature set beyond the Mobile TV support (which is quite enough by itself). You'll find Bluetooth, … Read more
