Remember last October when T-Mobile launched the Samsung SGH-T639? Though the carrier lacked a 3G network at the time, the SGH-T639 debuted with support for 3G UMTS services. When we asked T-Mobile what was up, a representative responded by saying that the SGH-T639 "is positioned to be among the first devices to take advantage of a future UMTS network." No, we weren't satisfied with that answer, either.
Fact: HTC will hold a press conference in London tomorrow (May 6) to make an announcement that will highlight the "next wave of HTC innovation." Rumor: the company is expected to introduce the HTC Touch Diamond, the next-gen HTC Touch, as well as a couple of other possible smartphones. Now, we're not really ones to gossip but chances are fairly good that the Touch Diamond will, in fact, show its pretty face tomorrow.
Let's face it, the iPhone can do a whole bunch of things, some necessary (like talking, texting and emailing) and others not-so-necessary (like the rolling-a-make-believe-ball-into-a-peg-fame) pretty well. But, you would hope that one of the more basic features like the weather function would work better than it does. Sure, the icons are pretty and easy to understand. One of my favorites is the ambiguous sun-with-raindrops icon, so you know that it's supposed to rain and be sunny, right.... The forecasts are not detailed, and have questionable accuracy at best. I've been noticing this trend for months now, … Read more
Skype for Windows and Mac is well-regarded for offering stable, free VoIP to other Skype users and affordable computer-to-phone calls, to both landlines and cell phones. Call quality still varies depending on your Internet connection and what else you're doing with it while using Skype, although the latest version indicates some progress in ameliorating that through audio engine tweaks.
Since the introduction of free long distance to U.S. cell phones, Skype may have dropped a bit in popularity for domestic calls. For international purposes, though, it's still the standard and extremely popular. Newer features include conference calling … Read more
For much of its life Virgin Mobile USA has been the exclusive domain of Kyocera and UTStarcom cell phones. Yet that began to change last year when LG offered the new LG Aloha LX140. And now just a couple of weeks after LG added its second Virgin Mobile phone, the LG Flare LX175, it appears Samsung is joining the carrier's family. On its Web site, Virgin Mobile is promising that the Samsung Slash is coming soon. The slider phone sports a slick design and a functional feature set that includes Bluetooth, voice dialing, a speakerphone, messaging, a camera, MP3 … Read more
Hey now! There's an interesting story coming out the Boy Genius Report (BGR) that's creating a lot of buzz among the cell phone community. According to BGR, Research in Motion will release a BlackBerry, codenamed "Kickstart," with a flip design and has some hands-on photos of the smartphone as well as another shot of the device with T-Mobile branding.
It's said that the Kickstart will have a monochromatic external display with a "color glow" border around it, while the inside will feature a 320x240 resolution, color display, standard BlackBerry shortcuts and trackball navigator, … Read more
BenQ might not jump into your head when it comes to mobiles as fast as, say, Boris Johnson when you say "useless foppish toff," but it's still in the game. Its new C36 handset looks almost identical to 3's Skype handset we looked at back in October (and still use). It's a music phone with support for MP3, WAV, AMR, and good old MIDI files, has a 176 x 220 LCD display and--chickety-check this out--"health management."
As the iPhone continues to march across the globe, Google's special (and slick) interface that was introduced in mid-December has been limited to English speakers. However, yesterday the company rolled it out to 33 countries in 16 languages, including Chinese--despite the fact the handset is not available through any Chinese carriers.
More importantly, Google continues to create special mobile variations of its other pages, which now includes Google News and support for users of Google Apps. Google Apps users can now check their mail using the same interface regular Gmail users have been enjoying, with the added benefit of … Read more
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the largest contract chip manufacturer in the world, will crank up its MEMS foundry business. Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology is used in Apple's iPhone and the Nintendo Wii.
MEMS typically have a microprocessor and other components such as microsensors. For example, MEMS technology is used in the iPhone and Wii to allow these devices to detect motion and changes in orientation.
In the iPhone, a device called an accelerometer detects when the user rotates the iPhone from portrait to landscape modes, then automatically adjusts the display, so the entire width of a web page or … Read more
It's no secret that the Garmin Nuvifone is one of the most anticipated smartphones of this year--partly because of its killer feature set (GPS with full navigation, 3.5-inch touch screen, quad-band world roaming, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, 3-megapixel camera, and so on) and partly because everyone wants to see if Garmin can actually pull this off. However, what has remained a secret is the carrier and pricing, or at least, until now?
